Preparations to repel and control insects in Vietnamese plants

21/10/2023
Patent 36318 "Preparations for repelling and controlling insects" was granted to Dr. Luu Dam Ngoc Anh, Vietnam Museum of Nature, by the National Office of Intellectual Property according to Decision 39209/QD-SHTT dated June 6, 2023. The invention proposes a new preparation of herbal origin, effective in preventing and repelling insects, especially Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that are vectors of dangerous diseases for humans and animals such as dengue hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever, and Zika virus causing microcephaly of the fetus. In addition, the preparation also has the effect of preventing and repelling termites harmful to construction works, document archives, libraries; ants, and parasitic insect on the skin of pets.

Insects are the largest class of animals in the animal kingdom, accounting for nearly 80% of all animal species on earth, of which 10,000 are considered harmful or dangerous to humans. They are usually dangerous to 2 main groups: in medicine they are vectors that transmit diseases to humans and animals; in agriculture, they destroy crops (50% of rice crop failures are caused by insects, causing a loss of 1/3 of the corn crop, and nearly 1/5 of the wheat crop) (Riba and Silvy, 1989). Common insect pests around humans include flies, mosquitoes, ants, cockroaches and termites. They not only cause a lot of nuisance to human life when appearing in large numbers, but also are vectors of dangerous pathogens for humans and animals... Among them, mosquitoes are the most dangerous agent, spreading disease sources to cause major epidemics in the world and Vietnam (malaria, dengue fever,…). Therefore, the world has long formed and developed research directions to search for substances (both natural and synthetic) to kill or repel mosquitoes.

In the world, research works mainly focus on finding active ingredients capable of killing larvae of mosquitoes that transmit diseases (larvae in the aquatic environment), while products of natural origin have the ability to prevent and repel adult insects, especially compounds that are not toxic to humans, have a wide spectrum of action against many insects that have not been studied much.

According to the invention, the preparation is prepared from a mixture with a certain proportion of some essential oils of existing tree species in Vietnam, including essential oils of Lemon Guava species (Magnolia citrata), Melaleuca cajuputi, Mentha arvensis, Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), a mixture containing main ingredients such as linalool,  Sabinene, Citronelal, Neral, Geranial and, Citral have been proven by many studies to repel insects. The discovery of these compounds in the Lemon Guava tree (Magnolia citrata) has never been mentioned in known solutions.

The composition has a wide spectrum of action, in addition to preventing and repelling pathogenic insects such as mosquitoes that transmit viruses that cause dengue, malaria, yellow fever, Zika virus disease; and fleas that transmit plague. The product is also effectively used to prevent parasites on the skin of pets, protect archives of documents and libraries against the damage of biological agents (termites, ants). Moreover, preparations derived from herbs should be safe for humans, especially children; substitutes for similar products of chemical origin that affect human health and domestic animals.

The patented product is a testament to the efficient and sustainable use of Vietnam's existing resources to produce probiotics that repel and control insects while many biological products are still being imported from abroad.
