Observation station to research the northern delta environment and geography in Thai Binh province inaugurated
Prof. Chau Van Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Party Secretary and VAST President, leaders of functional departments under the academy, and key cadres from the Institute of Geography attended the ceremony.
Representatives from Thai Binh provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Thai Binh provincial Department of Science and Technology, leaders of Tien Hai district, Nam Phu commune and Con Vanh Lighthouse Station, and the Power and Infrastructure Development Company (PIDI) also participated in the ceremony.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Tuan, director of Thai Binh provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, presented a speech at the ceremony.
The observation station to research the northern delta environment and geography was proposed in the 1990’s by the Institute of Geography. The station investment was set by the VAST president to be divided into two periods.
So far, the construction of the station has completed the first phase. Implementing Document 15/KHCNVN – TCCB on January 5th 2012 of the VAST president on approving the establishment of the observation station to research the northern delta environment and geography, on January 6th 2012, the director of the Institute of Geography issued Decision 03/QĐ-ĐL to establish the observation station to research the northern delta environment and geography in Con Vanh commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province, with the following main functions and tasks.
• Continuously observe, follow and survey natural elements, natural resources and environmental elements to build up a highly exact and stable basic data system on the special ecological region in the northern delta and northern gulf territorial waters.
• Build and complete the process of surveying environmental and geographical elements, accessible natural resources, and assessing environmental effects for the region of the northern delta and northern gulf.
• Carrying out projects, science and technology tasks, applying experimentally new technology to improve the land, water and air environments, using new energy and materials to prevent regional pollution.
• Participating in meeting the demands of the locality on appraising socio-economic development projects in localities with respect to resources, environment and disaster prevention. Assessing the environmental effects of socio-economic development activities in localities.
• Providing science and technology transfer training and consulting for localities in fields using environmental resources, and internationally cooperating in organizing research observation stations.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Ky, director of the Institute of Geography, said that the observation station has an important position in the Red River Delta region and from the northern delta to the northern gulf. He added that with its special position, the observation station would not only contribute scientific data toward disaster warnings against storms, floods, tsunamis and sea level rise in the context of climate change, to serve local and regional socio-economic development, but also contribute to ensuring national security.
