From February 28th 2013 to March 7th 2013, a delegation from the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Science (FEB-RAS), led by its president Prof. Acad. Valentin I. Sergienko, paid a working visit to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and several units under the academy to further promote the cooperation between the two sides.

VAST and RAS in general and FEB in particular have a long traditional cooperation. Based on results of visits by leaders from the two academies in 2008 and 2009, so far, units under the two academies have coordinated to carry out many bilateral cooperation projects supported by the two sides. To promote cooperation on general study in biodiversity, biochemistry and aquiculture in Vietnam’s territorial waters, VAST and FEB-RAS coordinated in successfully conducting three survey trips on “Akademik Oparin” ship in 2005, 2007 and 2010. Based on results from these trips, VAST and FEB-RAS announced scientific works on the international press. In 2013, VAST and FEB-RAS conducted the fourth survey on Oparin ship in April 2013.

During the working visit to VAST in March 2010 by FEB-RAS, the two sides signed an agreement on the establishment of the Centre for Development and Promotion of Science and Technology between FEB-RAS and VAST to coordinate common research among institutes under FEB and VAST. Accordingly, institutes under VAST and FEB-RAS signed agreements to strengthen cooperation among laboratories of the two sides; adjust bilateral projects in 2014 and 2015 on marine life, marine biochemistry, biodiversity of the East and Southeast Asia marine ecosystem, oceanography, marine geology, natural disaster, laser physics and optoelectronics.

During the working session, the two sides discussed and proposed a cooperation plan for the future, focusing on carrying out the fourth survey about Vietnam’s seas on Oparin ship; signing agreements to sponsor bilateral cooperation project in the 2015-2016 period and the following periods; building the common laboratory on the cooperation results among institutes; organizing seminars to access the survey on Oparin ship as well as training young scientists for VAST and participating multilateral international cooperation projects.

VAST president, Prof. Chau Van Minh presented an honorary doctorate to FEB-RAS president, Prof. Acad. Valentin I. Sergienko; and insignia to three FEB-RAS vice presidents and two directors of institutes under FEB-RAS to recognize their contribution to the cause of VAST’s science.
