NASA cooperates with VNSC to organize a Workshop on Research on Land Cover, Land Use Change in Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia

30/03/2020
The US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City has coordinated with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC) under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to organize a workshop on research on land cover and land use change and its impacts in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

This is the largest project of NASA in the area of using remote sensing technology to observe the environment of Vietnam and provide analysts and policy makers information on environmental change affecting socio- economy.

Dr. Lam Dao Nguyen, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Space Technology Application Center (Vietnam National Space Center), made a speech at the workshop

The scientific objectives of the research are to quantitatively document the status and rates of land cover and land use change, map changes in population and demographic mobility in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Prof. Garik Gutman, Director of NASA Land Cover and Land Use Research Program, made a presentation at the workshop

Deployed in May 2018, NASA set up a database and allowed scientists to use this data from its remote sensing satellites to understand and assess land use change and its impacts in the region; hence, propose solutions to deal with the environmental challenges that Vietnam is facing, such as urbanization, air pollution, flooding and water pollution.
The project will continue to be carried out until 2021 with the cooperation of many scientists and researchers from more than 20 universities and institutes from many countries in the United States, Europe and Asia.
