Multi-purpose firefighting gel: A safe and effective solution for future
Prof. Ngo Quoc Anh (fifth from the left) at a field test of the research products conducted by the Tuyen Quang Fire and Rescue Department
The firefighting gel is available in both powder and viscous gel forms, making it easy to use with standard fire suppression equipment. Its main components include naturally derived SAPs such as cellulose and starch, combined with nano-materials like bentonite clay, magnesium hydroxide, and silica. These ingredients provide exceptional adhesion, fire resistance at temperatures up to 1300°C, and biodegradability, making the gel an effective long-term fire prevention material.
Two gel systems, VHGEL-01 and VHGEL-02, have been tested in real-world scenarios, demonstrating their ability to rapidly extinguish Class A fires (solid materials) in under 300 seconds while offering superior surface protection on materials like wood, canvas, and straw. The product contains biodegradable active ingredients that leave no harmful residues in the soil and reduce toxic gas emissions, making it a significant improvement over existing commercial fire suppression products. In addition to quickly handling emergency fires, this gel prevents fire hazards in high-risk areas, particularly forests during dry seasons.
Prof. Ngo Quoc Anh stated that with a competitive price (around 150,000–180,000 VND/liter), safe production, scalability for mass production, and environmental friendliness, this product presents a comprehensive solution that can compete with international firefighting gels such as FireIce and Blaze Tamer 380. The research team is currently working on expanding its application to more complex fires, including fuel-based fires and lithium-ion battery fires, while also developing Vietnamese National Standards (TCVN) for firefighting gels. This marks a major step toward a sustainable and safe solution for communities in the future.
The research project has also resulted in one registered utility solution patent (Patent No. 39587/QĐ-SHTT.IP); the training of one Master's student, who has successfully completed their thesis; the publication of two SCIE-indexed journal articles, one Scopus-indexed article, and one prestigious national journal article
