Model of intensive tilapia farming in brackish water using Biofloc technology

22/06/2021
The Institute of Marine Resources and Environment has successfully developed the process of raising tilapia by biofloc technology in brackish water and transferred it to Hai Phong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hai Phong Fisheries Sub-Department, Center for Promotion Agriculture in Hai Phong, to be widely applied by businesses, units and individuals producing aquaculture in Hai Phong.

In implementation of the cooperation program between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Hai Phong city, with the goal of applying science and technology into production, the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources carried out the project: "Research on developing a model of intensive tilapia farming in brackish water using Biofloc technology in Hai Phong", code UDNGDP 08/19-20, chaired by Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh. After 2 years of implementing the project, the process of raising tilapia by biofloc technology in brackish water environment has been approved by Hai Phong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hai Phong Fisheries Sub-Department, and Hai Phong Agricultural Promotion Center, for being widely applied in aquaculture enterprises, units and individuals. The project has been approved as excellent by the examination council.

The project has developed techniques for forming and maintaining biofloc (BFL) in brackish water; developed the technical process and model of commercial tilapia farming with BFL in brackish water environment in Hai Phong with production scale. Environmental indicators of BFL are maintained: salinity threshold is from 5 to 25% and there is no big difference with the normal model. The ratio between carbon and nitrogen in tilapia farming technology applying BFT in brackish water ranges from 13.5/1 to 14.5/1. The density of tilapia cultured in the BFT brackish water system is 6-8 fish/m2. This is an important scientific basis for building the BFT technical process for intensive farming of tilapia in brackish water with the following information: Fish density of 6 fish/m2; Male tilapia fingerlings, domesticated in salinity, suitable for pond salinity, stocking size  of more than 2g/fish (4 - 6 cm); Average farming time is 150 days/crop; harvested fish weight: more than 500g/fish; Survival rate of more than 90%; Farming productivity: more than 30 tons/ha; Feed coefficient ranges from: 1.22 – 1.3, nitrogen-based organic substances (NH3, NO2..) can be controlled. The process has been completed with the intellectual property registration dossier.

The experimental results show that the economic efficiency per unit area is higher than that of the current local farming model, with increased labor productivity and reduced environmental pollution.
In addition to practical application products, the project published 1 article and completed the application for the Certificate of Utility Solution.
