Meeting reviews 2018 work and sets out 2019 plan of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology

On December 21, 2018, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) organized a meeting “Reviewing the work in 2018 and carrying out the plan for 2019”, in order to assess all of its activities last year and implement the tasks assigned by the Party and State in 2019. Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, member of the Party Central Committee (PCC), Secretary of the VAST Party Committee, and VAST President, chaired the meeting.

Attendants the meeting were representatives from Party and central Committees, including the Office of the PCC, the PCC Commission on Popularization and Education, the PCC Commission on Economics, and the PCC Commission on Inspection; Party organizations of central committees; representatives from ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, the Government Inspectorate, the Voice of Vietnam and the People"s Newspaper.

In 2018, with the care and direction of the Party and the Government, the support of the ministries and central and local agencies, the determination and efforts of all cadres, officials and scientists in VAST, VAST has focused on completing the assigned tasks and made many achievements at work, specifically:

In terms of space technology: After more than 5.5 years of operating in orbit, VNREDSat-1 satellite still operates stably and provides a lot of images serving the monitoring of natural resources, scientific research, border and island surveillance for national defense and economic development. The Vietnam Space Center project has completed the preparation for signing a contract to design and manufacture LotusSat satellites and build infrastructure in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. The MicroDragon Satellite was launched in orbit at 9:50 (Japanese time) on Thursday, January 17, 2019, supported by JAXA.

About the operation of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center: the center helped report 51 earthquakes with magnitudes from 2.5 to 5.3 according to the moment scale on the territory and waters of Vietnam in 2018. The mass media was fully informed of the details of these earthquakes. In addition, VAST proactively implements scientific and technological tasks related to earthquakes occurring in Song Tranh 2 hydropower dam, A Luoi and Son La.

In investment in upgrading the Center for DNA assessment of martyrs: The construction of the central building was completed with main devices; officers were sent to join training in DNA assessment. The Center conducted analysis of nearly 1,500 samples in 2018.

In implementation of Central Highlands Program 3: VAST continued to implement the National Science and Technology Program in the 2016-2020 period “Science and technology serve the socio-economic development in the Central Highlands in regional links and international integration”. In particular, for the first time, valuable and rare prehistoric human remains were discovered in volcanic caves in Krong No in the Central Highlands.

About the operation of Vietnam Museum of Nature: In preparation of building a large-scale Vietnam Museum of Nature in Quoc Oai Ecological Urban Area, VAST continued to improve and upgrade the living creatures-model evolutionary showroom, Vietnam"s first natural museum. In 2018, the room received more than 54,000 visitors, continued to receive rare and precious animal samples from agencies and individuals across the country. The museum also completed the work of plasticizing the turtle of Sword Lake and is preparing for hand over to Hanoi city.

In terms of basic research activities: VAST continued to lead the country in this area with the published works increasing in both quantity and quality. Apart from the publication of an international magazine in 2018, VAST published 51 monograph books in famous domestic and international publishers. Two International Centers for Category II in Mathematics and Physics under the support of UNESCO began operation from mid-2018, promoting VAST strengths, organizing many international classes, attracting many prestigious scientists to work at VAST.

VAST application activities were increasingly promoted. VAST implemented two new programs: technology development program and commercial product development program. There have been 50 patents and utility solutions patents, an increase of 25% compared to 2017. In addition, VAST implemented 198 tasks and cooperated with 40 provinces and cities and ministries.

Other fields of science and technology activities such as chemistry and environment; biology and ecology; physics, mechanics, materials science; earth science and marine science and technology all achieved good results.
Regular activities of the Academy on organization – personnel work, office, international cooperation, planning - finance, inspection work and training have been put into order and gained good results, along with the positive activities of the VAST Party Committee, Trade Union and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, which contributed greatly to the overall achievements of VAST in 2018.

In the framework of the meeting, delegates listened to some illustrative reports of their units to have better understanding in the operation and results of the Academy over the past year.

With its continuous efforts, VAST is honored to receive the First Class Labor Medal for 2 collectives; Second-class Labor Medal for one collective; Third-class Labor Medal for 2 individuals; Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister for 3 collectives and 1 individual. The Academy also met and passed the emulation achievements in 2018 at the Academy level, the results were announced that 8 units, 3 teams and 16 individuals received the Certificate of Merit of the VAST President; 2 individuals won the title of Academy-level emulation staff; 35 units and 27 collectives were recognized as excellent teams; 6 units won the title of the flag of the emulation movement of the Academy.

To promote the achievements gained in 2018, VAST is determined to carry out well the tasks of 2019 based on the development roadmap of the Academy approved in the Development Plan to 2020, vision to 2030, making worthy contributions to the country"s socio-economic development and national defense and security.
