Master Nguyen Ba Manh, a young scientist passionate about researching new materials, won the Creative Youth Award of the Vietnam Talent Awards 2025

29/11/2025
On the evening of October 27, the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education coordinated with other units to organize the 18th Vietnam Talent Awards Ceremony in 2025. MSc. Nguyen Ba Manh - Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology was honored to win the award in the field of Creative Youth, with the project "Research on green technology, energy saving in the synthesis of advanced materials of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and nano-oxides applied in many fields of environment, energy, agriculture and national security".

Mr. Nguyen Minh Triet - Secretary of the Central Youth Union, President of the Central Vietnam Student Association awarded the Creative Youth Award to MSc. Nguyen Ba Manh - Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology

MSc. Nguyen Ba Manh, born in 1995, is a typical young scientist nominated by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. To date, he has 39 international articles. Previous typical works have received recognition including: "Outstanding works, initiatives, products" Award at the Youth Creativity Festival organized by the Central Committee of the Youth Union in 2024; "Vietnam Science and Technology Creativity VIFOTEC" Award organized by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in 2024; Creative Labor Badge of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor in 2025.

The work of MSc. Nguyen Ba Manh: "Research on green technology, energy saving in the synthesis of advanced metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and nano-oxide materials applied in many fields of environment, energy, agriculture and national security" won the Creative Youth Award of the Vietnam Talent Award 2025 with outstanding features such as:

Creativity of the project

The research work with continuous-flow microwave technology applied in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and nano-oxide materials has shortened the synthesis time from 24-72 hours at 150-220 degrees Celsius and 2-10 atm pressure to 2-30 minutes (at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius and ambient pressure). Moreover, this technology also uses active radicals, crystals and modifiers to synthesize nano-sized MOFs, using safe solvents and saving energy.

This is the first time this technology has been applied in Vietnam and MOFs products synthesized using this technology have not been developed even in the world.

Completeness of the project

Microwave technology has successfully synthesized 14 different MOFs material systems for applications in various fields such as national security, energy production, environmental treatment and green agriculture.

Notably, MOF-808 material has been integrated with nano-oxide material to manufacture disinfectants for military technical equipment and skin disinfectants that have been practically applied in the Chemical Corps. The project is a completed product, with full documentation and instructions for use.

Application of the project

MOF-808 product has been tested for its combat properties in handling military toxic substances at the Chemical Corps, Ministry of National Defense. This product is being protected for mass production "0", serving in combat units of the Ministry of National Defense.

Furthermore, this technology has successfully synthesized 14 different MOFs material systems for application in various fields such as national security, energy production, environmental treatment and green agriculture. Specifically, the BiVO4/MOF-808/g-C3N4 catalyst can treat sulfur compounds in fuel up to 99.5% to below 5 ppm in 25 minutes, meeting Euro 5 standards.

The Ni-Cu-BTC-II material has an adsorption capacity of up to 5.91 and 5.84 mmol/g for CO2 and H2S, and the CO2 adsorption capacity remains stable for at least 10 cycles. The g-C3N4/CQD/FeNi-BTC material can adsorb 100% of polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics at a concentration of 1200 mg/L in just 45 min under practical conditions. Sensors developed from MOFs have been used to detect H2S in air, herbicides, 2,4-dichlorophenol, heavy metals, and antibiotics in aquatic environments.

Project effectiveness

The production cost of MOFs is reduced by 20-50 times compared to imports because the technology has shortened the synthesis time from 24-72 hours at a temperature of 150-220 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 2-10 atm to 2-30 minutes at a temperature below 100 degrees Celsius and ambient pressure.

MOF-808 material can completely hydrolyze military toxins such as HD and the chemical nerve agent simulant paraoxon-methyl in 2.5 minutes, faster than current disinfectants in the Ministry of National Defense's inventory (30 minutes to 120 minutes).

The project has published 19 articles in prestigious international journals (100% Q1) such as Chemical Engineering Journal (Q1, IF 13.2), Journal of Hazardous Materials (Q1, IF 11.2).

The project is completing a public process on MOF membrane synthesis technology for application in making antibacterial masks and effectively treating military toxins, sending it to the Intellectual Property Office to register for intellectual property protection rights.

MSc. Nguyen Ba Manh was recognized for his outstanding work in 2024 - an event organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union

Vietnam Talent Awards

The Vietnam Talent Awards has marked nearly two decades of formation and development, becoming one of the prestigious awards in the fields of science - technology, education and learning encouragement in Vietnam. From the initial goal of searching for and honoring talents in the Information Technology industry, the Awards have continuously expanded their scope, comprehensively reflecting the pillars of sustainable development of the country. Thereby, the Awards have contributed to discovering, encouraging and spreading creative values in the community, especially the team of intellectuals, scientists and creative workers across the country.

Over the past 18 seasons, there have been many potential application projects reaching out to international markets such as: Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, India, England, Italy and even countries with very high technology requirements such as Japan and the United States. Many highly applicable and organized products have been awarded and ranked in the top 5 high-tech enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region or the top 100 typical global industrial enterprises.

Outstanding projects awarded the Vietnam Talent Award 2025 include: "Implementing multi-organ transplantation from brain-dead donors"; "Effectiveness of combined treatment with thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy in acute cerebral infarction"; "Application of artificial intelligence in receiving, managing, and selecting recipients of donated organs and tissues"...
