Launching ceremony of School Council, awarding Decision to recognize President of School Council for term 2021-2026 and appointing the Principal Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology

On December 9, 2021, the launching ceremony of School Council for the term 2021-2026, awarding Decision to recognize the President of the School Council and appointing the Principal Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH), took place in Hanoi.

At the ceremony, on behalf of the governing agency, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, awarded the Decision to recognize as the President of the School Council for the term 2021-2026 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha – VAST Vice President, and awarded the Decision to appoint USTH Principal Rector to Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest.

The appointment of enthusiastic, experienced, and highly qualified leaders from Vietnam and France to key leadership positions creates a solid premise for the University's development to enter the next phase,  a stage of sustainable and expanded development, and at the same time it shows the commitment and determination of the two Governments in building USTH to become a world-class university in Vietnam, the region and the world.

The School Council for the term 2021-2026 has 20 members. On the Vietnamese side, 10 representatives represent VAST, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Vietnam Airlines Corporation (Vietnamairlines), Newtatco One Member Co., Ltd.,  institutes and universities. On the French side, 10 people are representatives from the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Union for the Development of USTH (USTH Consortium) and universities, institutes, enterprises - strategic partners in training and research of the University.

The launching of School Council for the term 2021-2026

The event took place on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the University (December 9, 2009 - December 9, 2021). This is also an opportunity for USTH staff, lecturers, staff and students to look back on the achievements made in the 12-year journey of construction and development, and at the same time set new goals for the next stage of development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh thanked the French Government, the Ambassador, partners and members of the School Council for the term 2016-2021 for their contributions to the development of USTH, and congratulated Assoc. Prof.  Dr. Chu Hoang Ha on being appointed President of the USTH School Council for the term 2021-2026; Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest on the appointment as Principal of USTH; congratulated the USTH School Council for the new term (2021-2026) and hoped that the School Council and the Board of Directors will direct, develop a plan, and deploy it in the coming period to concretize the USTH development strategy, contributing to the development of USTH, affirming USTH's role and position in education at home and in the international arena, and further tightening the Vietnam-France cooperation relationship.

At the ceremony, Mr. Nicolas Warnery, Ambassador of the Republic of France to Vietnam, emphasized that the establishment of the new school council is an important event for USTH because its members include "wise men" who will jointly come up with medium and long-term policies for the future development of the University. The Ambassador believes that the University Council with a high degree of tenure will help the university thrive in the current and future competitive research environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, two professors Jean-Marc Lavest and Chu Hoang Ha deeply thanked Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and the French Embassy in Vietnam for their trust and assignment of responsibility. This is a great honor and also a great responsibility. The President of the Council and the Principal are committed to continuing to promote the results of the previous term to strive to make USTH more and more developed, becoming a world-class university in Vietnam, the region and the world.

About USTH

USTH was established within the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement between Vietnam and France in 2009 and is considered the largest and most ambitious higher education cooperation project of the French Government abroad, a typical example for the friendly cooperative relationship between Vietnam and France.

From the initial 6 training majors, based on the needs of the Vietnamese labor market, USTH has opened 10 new training majors, bringing the total number of training disciplines of the University to 16. University training programs of the University were accredited and recognized by the French Council for Higher Education and Research (HCERES) in 2017, which means that USTH's degrees and credits are recognized as equivalent to European universities. The university also cooperates with French universities to grant Vietnamese-French dual degree master's programs.

USTH pioneers to bring high-quality programs taught in English according to an advanced educational model with study, practice and research opportunities comparable to universities in France and Europe. On average, 70% of USTH students and trainees get to do foreign internships at more than 200 universities, research institutions, and businesses in 20 countries around the world.

Over the past 12 years of construction and development, USTH has become a prestigious university in science and technology training, affirming its position in the Vietnamese and international education system, with the number of students entering undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs continuously increasing      over the years. In particular, in the 2021 – 2022 academic year, the number of bachelor's students increased by 74%, and the number of master's students increased by 133%.

In terms of research, the University has built 4 international affiliated laboratories and strong research teams, gathering the participation of many excellent and experienced scientists at universities and research organizations of Vietnam, France and many other countries. Currently, an average of 1 lecturer of the University publishes 1.5 articles in the SCIE list/year, which is close to the international publishing capacity of regional and international universities.

Entering a new phase - a period of sustainable development and expansion, USTH is making strong changes to put the University on the right development path to catch up with the trend of the fourth technology revolution. The goal is to become a world-class excellent university, as expected by the Vietnamese and French governments. In terms of training, the University is actively cooperating with French universities under the USTH Consortium to open Vietnamese-French dual-degree bachelor's programs for Chemistry, Information Technology and Biotechnology. It is also expected to open a new pharmaceutical industry, bringing the total number of USTH training disciplines to 17. In addition, the construction project of the School on Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park started in September 2021 and is expected to be completed. Established in 2023, USTH will become a university with international standard facilities following the model of French and European universities.
