Introduction of waste treatment technology
The workshop was organized with the aim of promoting VAST's waste treatment technologies to localities, businesses and specific users; connecting managers and entrepreneurs with scientists to exchange information to promote commercialization of S&T products and results, as well as orient research and implementation in accordance with practical needs.
Not only leading in basic scientific research in Vietnam, as reflected in the number of international publications, VAST was also recognized as "Leader of innovation in South Asia and Southeast Asia" (by Clarivate organization - UK, as voted two consecutive years, 2020 and 2021) with a higher number of patents and utility solutions from year to year, ranking first in the country and many technologies applied in practice.
The waste treatment technologies selected to be introduced in the workshop are all derived from the research over many generations of scientists of the academy, developed into modern applied products but having been "localized" to suit the circumstances and conditions of Vietnam. The technologies have gradually met the urgent need of environmental treatment in our country such as:
+ Solid waste treatment:
Domestic waste: Institute of Environmental Technology, Institute of Biotechnology, Institute of Chemical Technology, Institute of Materials Science, Center for Research and Technology Transfer, etc. have applied Compost technology (Aerobic), Anaerobic digestion, Mechanic Biotechnology Technology, incineration, and fuel production from waste, to turn waste into products that contribute to safety and food security (soil supplements) and energy security (electricity, RDF...).
Hazardous waste: The Institute of Environmental Technology has researched and developed NFIC-free incinerators. Many generations of incinerators have been born and have been transferred to users in all regions of the country. This is a work recognized for applying high-level science in practice and was honored to be awarded the 2019 Tran Dai Nghia Prize for the authors of the Institute.
Industrial waste: Institute of Tropical Technology, Institute of Materials Science, Institute of Geography of Ho Chi Minh City have developed suitable technologies to use industrial wastes such as kiln slag or fly ash, creating raw materials or aggregates for the construction materials industry such as unburnt bricks and stone powder, ensuring cleanliness and safety for the environment.
Scientists and managers reported at the Conference
+ Treatment of surface water pollution in urban and residential areas: the Institute of Environmental Technology, the Institute of Biotechnology, the Institute of Materials Science, the Institute of Physics, and the Institute of Information Technology have applied biological membranes MBR and microorganisms on the Internet of Things (IoT) platform.
+ Plastic treatment: Plastic waste has become a national problem; Vietnam is among the 20 countries with the largest amount of waste. This is also a major source of plastic waste discharged into the sea (accounting for about 6% of the world's total plastic waste discharged into the sea). The Institutes’ scientists are accompanying all levels and industries in turning plastic waste into useful materials such as work at the Institute of Environmental Technology, the Institute of Biotechnology, and the Institute of Chemistry.
+ Exhaust gas treatment: TiO2/SiO2 and TiO2/Al2O3 photocatalytic gas filters of the Institute of Environmental Technology, silica and cordirite ceramic skeletons as catalytic modules, etc., are installed on individual emission sources, as well as industrial zones cause adverse impacts on air quality in large urban areas.
Accompanying the scientific research and technological development of the Academy are the management agencies from the ministries and branches in the field of environment. Delegates from the Vietnam Environment Administration and the Department of Water Resources Management have set out practical requirements in their management fields for technology, in order to help VAST scientists orient their research in environmental protection, turning waste into a "renewable resource".
Deeply grasping the spirit of bringing science and technology and innovation to become the driving force for development, VAST scientists always work closely with businesses to turn research results into products associated with reality, serving actual needs. Through this, businesses can talk directly with scientists, learn more about actual needs, develop solutions and place orders for scientists of the Academy to research and solve their practical needs.
In the era of strong technological development, the link between research and production is an internal need and also a key factor for scientists and businesses to develop and improve their competitive position, building an innovation ecosystem. In this organic relationship, businesses play a central role; scientists create knowledge, develop technology and train high-quality human resources; and the State plays the role of creating, connecting, developing the policy and institutional environment which promotes the relationship and interaction between businesses and scientists to create, apply and transform knowledge into added values serving the economy and social life.
