International seminar reviews "VAST - FEBRAS cooperation roadmap on marine science research in 2018-2025 period" and assesses 20 year international cooperation on marine science and technology

15/04/2021
On November 26 and 27, 2020, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) cooperated with the Far East Institute, the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS), to organize an online seminar to review "VAST-FEBRAS cooperation roadmap on marine scientific research in the 2018-2025 period" and assessment of 20 years of international cooperation on marine science and technology at VAST.

The event drew the participation of Prof.Dr. Phan Ngoc Minh, Vice President of VAST, leader of the International Cooperation Department, leaders and scientists of affiliated research units, especially those with marine related research fields such as the Institute of Oceanography, Institute of Marine Resources and Environment, Institute of Natural Products Chemistry, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Institute of Space Technology and Nha Trang Institute of Technology Research and Application.

Prof.Acad. Grigory Dolgikh, Vice President of FEBRAS, Prof. Acad. Viktor Bogatov, Chairman of the Scientific Council of FEBRAS and leader of the International Cooperation Department, and leaders and scientists of a number of units with extensive marine research collaborations with VAST, such as the Pacific Institute of Organic Biochemistry, Pacific Oceanography Institute.

During the first session, scientists from both sides reported, exchanged and discussed the research results of biodiversity, biochemistry and marine environment, geology, marine geophysics and oceanography after two-year implementation of "VAST-FEBRAS cooperation roadmap on marine scientific research in the 2018-2025 period" by two trips to Vietnam's waters in 2018 using the Oprain ship, and in 2019 using Lavrentiev ship. VAST and FEBRAS agreed to continue to carry out research activities according to the Signing Roadmap.

The plenary session summarized and evaluated international cooperation activities in marine research at VAST from 2000 to present, focusing on biodiversity research, marine biochemistry and marine environment; marine geology and geophysics, and marine science and technology research activities in multilateral organizations.

In order to perform well the tasks of marine science and technology research, over the recent years, VAST has maintained and developed international cooperation with traditional partners such as the Far East Institute, the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEBRAS), and the French Institute for Development Studies (IRD); and expanded cooperation activities with many new partners in Western Europe, North America and Australia to diversify and multilateral cooperation activities to reduce the gap in marine science level, creating opportunities for Vietnamese scientists to study and collect offshore geological and biological samples, especially taking samples from the continental shelf to the seabed, where the depths are as great as the East Sea bottom.

The research results on marine science and technology at VAST through international cooperation not only make important contributions to promoting the country's marine economic development, but also help to further strengthen friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the international community, and contribute  to affirming Vietnam's sovereignty over the sea and islands./.
