International honors for scientists of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology
Within the framework of the 37th Session of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) held from September 18-20, 2024, Prof. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), has been elected as an IAAS Academician. Thus, since proposing and being selected from hundreds of applications for IAAS member countries to approve the candidate list at the 36th Session (September 2023), Prof. Le Truong Giang has officially become an Academician of a prestigious international scientific organization gathering the world's leading scholars. This is an honorable recognition of the important contributions of the VAST Vice President in scientific research and technology development in Vietnam as well as in international cooperative relations. Also elected as Academicians in this 37th Session were many other famous scientists such as Prof. Kraniskov, President of Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Kvadrakov, President of National Center for Scientific Information of Russian Federation, Prof. Orly, President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Allaberdy, President of Turkmenistan National Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Chizik, First Vice President of Belarusian National Academy of Sciences. As of the 37th Session, IAAS currently has 47 Academicians out of thousands of Academicians from member organizations that are prestigious national academies of sciences and research units in the world. Prof. Acad. Le Truong Giang is also the second Vietnamese scientist to receive IAAS voting, after Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST (approved by IAAS at the 33rd Session in 2019 and honored at the 35th Session in 2022).
VAST has been a founding member of IAAS since 1993 and has cooperated with many member academies, implemented activities within the framework of the Association, actively participated in the activities of the Scientific Council and was a member of the Chemistry Council. At the 37th Session, the VAST delegation led by Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, led an important presentation at the roundtable discussion to introduce and evaluate the development model of the University, a training organization under VAST in association with research units to take advantage of gray matter and facilities from leading experts and a modern laboratory system at research units; to build and train a contingent of successors with capacity, qualifications and passion for science for the next stage of development. VAST is considered a dynamic research organization in IAAS with a unique development model and along with VAST being trusted by IAAS to elect two VAST Leaders who are IAAS Academicians, it also contributes to affirming VAST's position in IAAS and the international scientific community.
At the same time, at a bilateral meeting between VAST and Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, was awarded a Special Medal on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the establishment of RAS. The awarding of medals and the list of recipients of special medals on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of RAS is carried out by decree of the President of the Russian Federation. This is a noble award to recognize the scientific achievements and outstanding contributions of VAST President in promoting long-term and persistent, diverse and effective scientific cooperation between the two academies in particular, making an important contribution to the connection of science and technology between the two countries. Cooperation activities with RAS have also contributed to the connection and cooperation with Belarusian National Academy of Sciences (NASB), a long-standing traditional partner of VAST, and many cooperation with VAST during the period of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. On this basis, NASB awarded the highest medal named Academician Ignatovsky, an award for individuals with outstanding achievements in promoting international scientific research cooperation for Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST. NASB is a leading scientific institution of Belarus, famous for its achievements in many fields such as physics, information technology and, biotechnology. The Ignatovsky Medal shows Belarus' recognition of the constant efforts of the Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh in building a scientific bridge between Vietnam and Belarus.
Titles and medals Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh and Prof. Acad. Le Truong Giang have received not only show international recognition for scientific achievements and personal contributions, but also mark the development of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in strengthening international cooperation and global integration; contributing to enhancing the role and position of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in multilateral international organizations such as IAAS. Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology hopes that in the future, it will implement many effective cooperation activities with academies and research organizations of IAAS member countries and contribute to promoting the joint activities of IAAS for global scientific and technological development.
