International cooperation to strengthen self-reliance in quantum technology

As part of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology's (VAST) ongoing efforts to promote international cooperation in quantum technology research and development, a VAST delegation led by Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, attended the first BRICS Quantum Technology Forum in the Russian Federation on June 7-8, 2026, to learn from advanced quantum technology development models and gradually build a foundation for quantum research in Vietnam.

At the forum, VAST's presentation, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Trung, Director of the Institute of Physics, outlined Vietnam's approach to developing quantum science and technology, highlighting the crucial role of international cooperation in building long-term research capacity. Building on the country's strengths in mathematics, theoretical physics and computational science, VAST aims to promote research in quantum simulation, quantum algorithms, quantum materials, quantum sensing, post-quantum cryptography and information security-related applications.
Speaking to policymakers, scientists and media representatives at the forum, Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, said Vietnam is pursuing a focused approach to quantum technology by developing a highly skilled workforce, establishing strong research groups, strengthening shared research infrastructure and expanding cooperation with leading international scientific centres, rather than spreading resources too thinly or competing comprehensively with global technology powers. This approach is expected to gradually build indigenous capabilities in a highly complex field that requires long-term investment and a strong foundation of scientific knowledge.
In recent years, quantum technology has emerged as one of the world's key strategic areas of competition. Many countries have launched large-scale national quantum programmes to develop technologies such as quantum computing, quantum communications, quantum sensing and post-quantum cryptography. However, scientists emphasise that these technologies are underpinned by fundamental research in quantum physics, quantum materials and many-body quantum systems. As a result, the international scientific community no longer views quantum technology solely through the lens of quantum computing, but instead promotes the parallel development of both fundamental research and applied technologies. Research areas such as quantum topological materials, strongly correlated electronic systems, quantum geometry, quantum photonics and new quantum states of matter are now regarded as the scientific foundations for the development of quantum computing, quantum communications and next-generation quantum technologies.
