Institute of Oceanography – 100 years of vision and mission

The predecessor of the Institute of Institute of Oceanography was the Indochina Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, which was established on September 14, 1922. Through historical periods, with different names, since 1993, the Institute was officially named Institute of Oceanography with its headquarters in Nha Trang and 2 sub-institutes in Hanoi and Hai Phong. In 2001, the two branches split into independent Institutes with their own names. Since then, the Institute of Oceanography has been a leading marine research institution under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Over a century of operation and development, the Institute of Oceanography has constantly grown in terms of scale, potential and operational results; the Institute has really become the leading unit of basic research, application deployment, training and propaganda on the sea in the country, with regional and international prestige.
The Institute has published thousands of research works, hundreds of monographs; Many research results of the Institute have been applied and transferred to businesses, serving the protection of marine environmental resources, rational exploitation and use of marine resources, and protection of national sovereignty at sea. The Institute is a prestigious university-level training institution in Oceanography and Marine in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Besides, the Institute of Oceanography is also the first and leading unit in introducing and propagating about marine resources and environment to Vietnamese people and international friends. In particular, the Museum of Oceanography is a reliable place for sightseeing, discovery and scientific research in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, with a collection of tens of thousands of specimens and specimens of more than 6,000 biological species. Sea animals and thousands of living sea creatures of 400 species are being nurtured and displayed at the Museum.
Currently, the Institute of Oceanography has 11 specialized research laboratories, 02 key laboratories at VAST level on "Research on Marine Biology-Dynamics" and “Food Safety and Environment (Central Region)”, Oceanography Museum with synchronous and modern equipment and machinery in order to well implement the country's marine science and technology strategy. The Institute has a team of formally trained researchers with a total of 123 staff, including 02 Professors, 02 Associate Professors, 19 PhDs and 40 Masters.

Speaking at the ceremony, on behalf of the Government, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam congratulated and acknowledged the achievements of generations of researchers, officers and employees of the Institute of Oceanography. The Deputy Prime Minister hoped that with the tradition of 100 years, the Institute of Oceanography will develop more and more, promote the achieved results, continue to devote and contribute to the cause of scientific and technological research on the sea, contributing to the development of marine science and technology, worth contribute to the common cause, for the country to develop faster and more sustainably, to affirm the country's sovereignty over seas and islands, to maintain peace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea, in the international and regional sea areas.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Secretary of the Party Committee, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, highly appreciated the scientific activities of the Institute of Oceanography. This result has contributed to the understanding of the laws of Vietnam's sea in particular and the East Sea in general; The application-oriented basic scientific research direction of the Institute has brought practical effects to the sustainable development of marine economy, management of marine resources and environment. These results not only help the Institute of Oceanography improve the position and role of the Institute, but also contribute to the development of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, of Khanh Hoa province; contribute to the promotion of education and development of the marine and ocean economy of Vietnam; and expand cooperation and strengthen international integration.

Also at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Hai Ninh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, highly appreciated the contributions of the Institute of Oceanography to the socio-economic development of the province, especially in the field of science and technology, biodiversity conservation, marine economic development of Khanh Hoa province in recent years. The Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee also hoped that the Institute of Oceanography would continue to promote basic research, applied research and make many important contributions to the sustainable development of the locality, especially in the context of climate change, sea level rise, environmental pollution, degradation of ecosystems, biodiversity, biological resources and many challenges from the sea. At the same time, the Institute of Oceanography continues to be the red address in discovering interesting things from the sea, educating people about the knowledge of the ocean, spreading stronger love and the sense of protecting the country's sovereignty over seas and islands...

On this occasion, the President awarded the First-class Labor Medal to the Institute of Oceanography for outstanding achievements in work from 2017 to 2021; awarded the Third-class Labor Medal to Mr. Vo Si Tuan, former Director of the Institute of Oceanography, for his outstanding achievements during his work, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland. VAST awarded the Certificate of Merit to the Institute of Oceanography, 01 specialized department and 5 individuals who have made outstanding achievements in science and technology activities. Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to 5 collectives and 10 individuals with outstanding achievements, contributing to the construction of the Institute of Oceanography and Khanh Hoa province.
