Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics (abbreviation name: IMGG) is a state research institute and under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. It was established according to Decision No. 62/2008/NĐ-CP dated in May 5th, 2008 of the Vietnamese Government.

Decision No. 53/KHCNQG-QĐ dated June 22nd, 1993 of Director of National Center of Technology and Science on the establishment of Hanoi Institute of Oceanography.

FUNCTIONS AND TASKS

Functions:

Basic research and surveys, technology development and highly qualified manpower training in the fields of geology, marine geophysics, physical oceanography and other fields under the regulations of the Government

Tasks:
a) The basic marine research and investigation activities:

- Environmental geology and natural hazard researches have been carrying out in order to take part in the environment protection and natural hazard mitigation.
- Geodynamics and deep structure researches of the Earth crust used for marine geo-resources investigation and engineering constructions.
- Research on geophysical fields served the national security as well as protecting the marine sovereignty;
- Research on physic oceanography and atmospheric physics applied for marine engineering construction, environment protection, forecasts, natural hazard prevention and mitigation;
- Research synthesis on marine natural resources and energy provides scientific foundation using in the planning for development plan of marine economy;
- Fundamental research on natural condition and mineral resources of sea and adjacent areas of Vietnam.

b) The technology development:

- Application of sensing technologies and GIS to manage marine natural resources and environment;
- Application of the high technologies in exploration, exploitation, construction and protection the marine and islands projects;
- Update and Collection the most recent studies on the East Sea supplying for research, propaganda, and sovereignty protection of seas and islands;
- Construction of marine geology and geophysics database in order to meet the need of scientific research as well as economic development;
- Development and transferring the new research results on marine science and technology in production and business; to co-operate and joint with domestic as well as international research organizations on research and development of marine science;

c) Participation in evaluating process of technology and science qualification, economy and technical

feasibilities of key marine projects required by the governmental agencies;
d) Services of science and technology in marine geology and geophysics, and other related science fields;

e) Training services of science and technical manpower in marine geology and geophysics fields, and other related science fields;

g) International co-operation in marine geology and geophysics and other related science fields;

h) Organization and staffs management under the regulations of the Government and VAST;

i) Finance and assets management of the institute under the regulations of the Government

k) Implementation the other tasks assigned by the President of VAST.

ACTIVITIES

- Research geological environment and different type of natural hazards aims to contribute to environment protection as well as natural disaster mitigation;
- Research of geodynamics and deep structure in support of exploration of mineral resources as well as marine construction works;

ACHIEVEMENTS

Scientific research to serve national defense and to protect national sovereignty:

- Project “Research of geology and geomorphology of Da Tay island and Spartly islands” (1998-2000) for the opening of channel entrance.
- 1995-2000: IMGG hosted and carried out project: The scientific basis for determining the outer limits of the continental shelf of Vietnam, (MOST-sea program KHCN-6.04);
- KC.09.10 project at state level (2000-2004) (scientific and law base for the determination of the outer limit of south west sea) is a basis for the planning of national sea boundaries in the sea area overlap among Vietnam - Indonesia - Malaysia - Thailand - Cambodia (co-operate with the National Boundary Commission - Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
- In 2000, IMGG joined with the Vietnam Navy Command to study demagnetization ground in Cam Ranh for serving the operation of vessels at sea.
- 2005-2007: IMGG published the Atlas on natural condition and environment of East Vietnam Sea and adjacent areas, including 61 maps, which is basis for management – marine economic development and exploration of mineral sources as well as serves the struggle for sovereignty at sea.
- 2006-2009: IMGG collaborates with the National Boundary Commission - Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutes in carrying out the maritime boundary plan: “Determination of the outer limits of continental shelf of Vietnam”.

The fundamental surveys to serve the strategies to develop marine economy and management.

- Research of geology, geodynamics and mineral potential of East Vietnam Sea(KT-03-02, 1995, key national program at state level);
- Research of characteristics of geology and geophysics of the underground area of Tu Chinh – Truong Sa aims to search and explore mineral resources (under the program Vietnam East Sea and Islands 1993-1997);
- The investigation of characteristics of physics and atmospheric physics of Truong Sa archipelago (under the marine economic development program, 1998-2000);
- The investigation and assessment of changes of natural resources – environment in support of development of economic – social of Vietnam coastal zone (1998-2000);
- Geomagnetic field used for searching mineral of Vietnam continental shelf (2000-2001);
- Research of the characteristics of inverse tectonic activities and its impact to oil and gas structure of lowland area of Red River-Gulf Tonkin (2006-2007);
- Research of geological structure of deep water region (> 200 m) used as scientific base of exploration of relative mineral resources in the Southern Sea of Vietnam (KC.09.18/06-10);
- Research of coastal zone evolution of Cuu Long river and adjacent continental shelf in modern Holocene aims to serve for the sustainable development (Vietnam – German cooperation, Kiel University 2008-2009);
- Investigation, research on the Gas Hydrate potential on the East Sea (from 2008 up to now).

Research of natural disaster prevention and mitigation

- The application of remote sensing and GIS to assess the flooding level of Quang Tri Province (2001-2003);
- The investigation and assessment of different type of geohazards of coastal zone for natural disaster prevention and mitigation (1998-2001);
- Research of geohazards associated with local dynamic process of the West coastal area of Tonkin Gulf (2002-2003);
- Research of earthquake, volcanic, and Tsunami of East sea region (2004-2005);
- The investigation and assessment of natural hazards of Truong Sa archipelago and proposed solution to reduce the damages of its causes (East Sea program - Islands, 2008-2010);
- Research, submarine landslide warning on the Continental Shelf of South Central region (KC.09.11/11-15);

Research of plan, management and rational use of marine resources

- Establishment of geology – geophysics Atlas of East Sea with ratio of 1/1.000.000 (program KHCN-06-04, 1998-2000);
- Compile maps of natural condition of East Sea comprising of 60 maps of metrology, physical oceanography, geology, geophysics, marine biology and environment (ĐT. KC.09.02, 2001-2004).
- Synthesis writing on natural condition of coastal islands;
- Research of geodynamics and deep structure of East Vietnam Sea(1997-2000);
- Research of geology and geodynamics conditions of the North of Gulf Tonkin region supporting the economic development planning of the Northeast Vietnam (KC.09.09/11-15).

Research of environment protection

- Construction of environment database of coastal areas of Tonkin Gulf and Khanh Hoa sea (Vietnam - Australia 1997-1999);
- Research of sediment environment of coastal area of Red Rivel delta (ĐT. TTKHCNQG. 1998-2000;
- Management of natural resources and environment of coastal zone of East Vietnam Sea (1997-1999);
- Assessment of environment impact of coastal zone of Hai Phong - Kim Son, Ninh Binh (2003-2005);
- Application of remote sensing and GIS in the management of natural resources of coastal zone (2003-2005);
- Research and application of new geophysical methods in exploration of ground water and observation of saltwater intrusion in coastal zone and islands (application in Hải Phòng – Cát Bà, 2004-2005, Thái Bình 2006-2007).

The other achievements in science and technology activities

- IMGG published annually collection “The studies of Geology and Geophysics”.
- IMGG organizes science workshops, domestic and international seminars. Especially, the Institute organize “The First National Scientific Conference on Marine Geology” (September 2008) and The Second National Scientific Conference on Marine Geology (October 2013).
- The Institute studies in marine sciences as we annually organize surveys in sea areas of the country, especially Spartly and Paracel islands. Up to now, the Institute carried out 130 surveys on the sea and coastal regions;
- In addition, the Institute and staff has received awards for the science activities:
+ IMGG: Merit of President of VAST 2011; Emulation flag from Chairman of the Vietnam Labor Union of VAST for the years of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012; Merit Confederation of Vietnam Labor Union for the year of 2012; Labor Medal at the third level for the year of 2013.
+ Staff: 01 award of the effective work; 02 for completing the task in the project “the Determination of the outer limit of continental shelf ”; 02 awards of Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology..
