Institute of Marine Environment and Resources (IMER) celebrates the 50th anniversary of establishment and receives the third-class Independence Medal

The Institute of Marine Environment and Resources (IMER) celebrated the 50th anniversary of establishment, building and development (1959 – 2009); received the third-class Independence Medal of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on November 7th 2009, at Hai Phong City Theatre.


Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong, standing member of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Party Committee, Vice-President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Mr. Pham Van Quy, Vice-President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Professor-Academician Nguyen Van Hieu, former President of Vietnam Academy of Science (now Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology); Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Standing member of Hai Phong City Party Committee, Standing Vice-President of Hai Phong City People’s Committee; representatives of ministries, commissions and sectors from the central authority and Hai Phong City, Thua Thien – Hue and Quang Ninh provinces, member units of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, institutes, universities, State programmes, international projects, international guests, science associations, general departments and departments, Hai Phong City Radio and Television as well as all the officials of IMER.
IMER is now the National level Research Institute directly under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), it was established by the Government’s Decree 62/2008/ND-CP on May 12th 2008.


The function, mission, power and framework of the organization of IMER is regulated by the Decision 1086/QD-KHCNVN created on June 19th 2008 under the President of VAST. IMER has functions such as scientific education and study; consulting, research, implementation and technology application in various sectors as marine environment and resources, coast and island areas, training at postgraduate levels for officials and disseminating knowledge on the sea.


50 years is a long section of road for building and development. IMER’s forerunner was the Sea Investigation Team (in 1959), Hai Phong City Sea Research Station (in 1961), Sea Research Institute (in 1967), Gulf Bay Research Station (1976), Hai Phong City Sea Research Center (in 1989) and Oceanography Sub-Institute in Hai Phong City (in 1993).


Now, IMER has 85 associates including 10 officials possessing doctorial degrees, 22 officials have master level degrees and 44 officials have bachelor degrees. IMER’s framework of organization includes 01 Director, 02 Deputy Directors, a Science Council and 10 units directly under the IMER. The Institute also has 03 subordinate units such as the National Station on Observation and Analysis Marine Environmental in the North, National Station on Observation Atmosphere Environment at Coastal Areas in the North; and an Aquatic Survey Team.


After building and developing over 50 years, now, IMER has become the National level Research Institute directly under VAST. During the past years, IMER has well implemented political tasks that the Party and State charged it with; it has also made important contributions regarding sea research, protecting marine environment and resources; developing socio-economic levels ensuring security, sovereignty and national benefits concerning the sea.


On this occasion, all officials of the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources were bestowed the third-class Independence Medal by the State President; Hai Phong City People’s Committee presented Merit Certificates for 01 collective, 06 persons; and Thua Thien – Hue Province People’s Committee awarded Merit Certificates for 01 collective and 03 persons.
