Honorary Doctorate Award Ceremony of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology for Professor Dr. Jürgen Jost, Max Planck Institute for Mathematics for Natural Sciences Leipzig, Germany
Prof. Jürgen Jost has been Director and permanent member of Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, Germany since 1996, and honorary professor of University of Leipzig since 1998. He is also an external professor of Santa Fe Institute for the Science of Complexity in the USA and a member of the German National Academy Leopoldina, the Academy of Sciences and Literature at Mainz and the Saxonian Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Jost served on the Editorial boards of Math. Zeitschrift, Journal of the European Mathematical Society (Editor-in-Chief) and Appl. Math. Research eXpress. Currently, he serves on the Editorial boards of Calculus of Variations, Theory in Biosciences (Editor-in-Chief), Communications in Mathematics and Statistics, Information Geometry, and Vietnam Journal of Mathematics. He is also the founding and managing editor of several scientific monographs: Ergebnisse der Mathematik (Springer), Klassische Texte der Wissenschaft (Springer), Classic Texts in the Sciences (Birkhäuser), Wissenschaft und Philosophie /Science and Philosophy/Sciences et Philosophie, Mathematics of Data, starting in 2022 (Springer).
Prof. Jost received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the DFG (German Research Society) in 1993. He won major research grants including the ERC Advanced Grant VARIOGEO in 2010-2016 for the geometric calculus of variations and its Applications. His publications include more than 20 monographs (many of them with multiple editions) and about 500 scientific papers.
During his time in Vietnam, he has made many contributions to the construction and development of VAST, specifically: he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, in the capacity of Director, he supported many working trips of Vietnamese mathematicians to work as the head of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Leipzig. Recently, he has published more than 10 works and 02 books with Vietnamese mathematicians, including young scientists from the Institute of Mathematics.
At the ceremony, on behalf of the Leaders of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha, Vice President of VAST, awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jost. Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha warmly congratulated Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jost on being honored to receive the prestigious award of VAST, and at the same time appreciated his positive contributions to the cause of science and training at VAST and deeply thanked him. Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha expressed his hope that Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jost would continue to support the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Journal of Mathematics and Vietnamese scientists in the field of Mathematics in the coming time.
In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jost spoke about the importance of Mathematics in various fields of science. He also talked about the good feelings of his colleagues at the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematics and the honor of being conferred an "Honorary Doctorate" by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
