Hanoi University of Science and Technology Council members meet

On April 12, 2019, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH) (Vietnam – France University), held a meeting of the university council for the 5th time. Participants included Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, Party Central Committee member, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and Chairman of the university council; Bertrand Lortholary, French Ambassador to Vietnam; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh, acting rector of USTH; the university council members; and representatives from ministries, universities and Vietnamese and French research institutes.

The 5th university council meeting took place in the context of many positive factors affecting the development of USTH; including the project of building the university on a total area of 65 hectares in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, having been signed by the Prime Minister for an extension of 5 years and expected to start in March 2020.

Additionally, the Intergovernmental Agreement between Vietnam and France on USTH development in the period of 2019-2023 was signed in November 2018. Under this agreement, the two Governments expressed their determination and commitment to build USTH into an international-class excellent university and become a leading Southeast Asian university.

The 5th university council meeting decided many important contents contributing to the development of USTH in the coming time, including discussing and voting candidates for the position of the new rector of the university.


At the meeting, the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between USTH and the Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education and Training was held with the Union of more than 40 French universities and research institutes (Consortium), with the Center for technology research and technology and the Vietnam Museum of Nature under VAST. In particular, the USTH and Consortium signed a framework agreement on the contribution of both parties in teaching tertiary, master and doctoral degrees; scientific research, technology and innovation. The two sides agreed that from 2019, they will study conditions for the granting of the French-Vietnamese diploma system and prepare to apply for permission from the French Ministry in charge of Higher Education and Research to be able to carry out the system from the 2020-2021 year.

The delegates listened to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh, USTH Acting Principal, present the final report of the 2017-2018 school year and the university development orientation for the 2018-2019 school year. In the 2017-2018 school year, the university has achieved many outstanding achievements in scientific training and research compared to the previous school year. Specifically, the number of students enrolling in the university increased by 66%; the number of students and trainees going to foreign countries reached 60%; the university was, for the second time, ranked 7th in research on the list of Nature Index about Vietnamese universities and research institutes; and research work by Dr. Tran Dinh Phong, Dean of the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, won the Ta Quang Buu Prize 2018.
