From fundamental research to development of future strategic technologies: Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology promotes international connectivity to advance quantum science in Vietnam
While attending the innternational scientific workshop entitled “Recent Advances in Research on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems”, held at the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon, Prof. Dr Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, together with Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh, engaged in in-depth discussions with international scientists on experiences in quantum research and the potential for developing quantum science and technology in Vietnam.

Overview of the workshop
The workshop “Recent Advances in Research on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems” brought together many of the world’s leading scientists in the fields of quantum physics, quantum materials and computational science, including Prof. Charles Kane (University of Pennsylvania), Prof. Subir Sachdev (Harvard University), Prof. Philip W. Phillips (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), Prof. Dr Dam Thanh Son (University of Chicago), along with numerous experts from Princeton University, Cornell University, the University of Cambridge, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Hong Kong (China). The scientific programme of the workshop focused on advanced research directions related to strongly correlated electron systems, quantum materials, topological states, the fractional quantum Hall effect, quantum geometry, many-body quantum computation, and novel quantum phases of matter. These are areas attracting significant attention from the international scientific community because of their foundational importance to the development of next-generation quantum technologies such as quantum computing, quantum communications and quantum sensing.

Thematic discussion session
At the specialised working session with VAST and the Ministry of Science and Technology, many international scientists noted that Vietnam possesses considerable strengths in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics—fields that do not require excessively costly infrastructure but play a foundational role in modern quantum science.
The experts also emphasised that Vietnam should adopt a long-term development approach, placing people at the centre, promoting international training programmes, building networks of young Vietnamese scientists working abroad, and strengthening the organisation of scientific schools and international academic forums on quantum science.

Prof. Dr Tran Tuan Anh makes a speech at the specialised workshop
In discussions with international experts, Vice President Tran Tuan Anh stated that VAST is approaching the challenge of quantum technology from a comprehensive perspective, combining fundamental research, application-oriented development, and the cultivation of high-quality human resources. VAST shared with the experts the need to focus on directions that are aligned with Vietnam’s capabilities and conditions, particularly fields built upon strong foundations in mathematics and basic sciences. These would serve as a basis for Vietnam to participate in the global quantum value chain through areas such as quantum simulation, quantum algorithms, computational science, post-quantum cryptography, and quantum materials.
Vice President Tran Tuan Anh emphasised that quantum technology is no longer a purely academic research field but is increasingly becoming a strategic technology closely linked to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductors and the digital sovereignty of many nations. Therefore, building indigenous capabilities, connecting with international experts and forming a quantum research ecosystem in Vietnam are long-term and strategic requirements.

Prof. Dr Dam Thanh Son (centre) at the workshop
In the future, VAST will continue to strengthen international connectivity activities in this field. The proactive participation in international forums, collaboration with leading research centres, and engagement with top experts demonstrate VAST’s determination to gradually build a foundation for quantum science and technology in Vietnam.
