First International Chemistry Conference at USTH

27/12/2022
From December 8-11, 2022, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) held the first International Conference on Chemical Sciences (ICCS). The event is part of a series of International Chemistry Conferences held every 2 years and celebrates the 13th anniversary of the University (December 9, 2009 - December 9, 2022).

Opening of the Conference on the morning of December 9, 2022

Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, USTH Rector, making welcome speech

Speaking at the Conference, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, USTH Rector, said that the goal of the Conference is to bring good chemists to Vietnam to connect and collaborate in international research. The areas discussed at the Conference were the areas of research and teaching that USTH paid special attention to in the context that Vietnam is a rapidly developing country and has made strong commitments at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 27).

The conference attracted the attendance of more than 100 researchers from many countries around the world such as the US, Australia, Japan, China, Singapore and Vietnam, promising to become a bridge between the Vietnamese chemistry community and the international chemistry community, giving young Vietnamese chemists the opportunity to meet and exchange with international chemists.

With the theme of Chemistry for Sustainable Development, the Conference focused on 3 research areas: Chemistry for Energy Conversion and Storage; Chemistry for Environment Analysis and Treatment; Chemistry for Health Care. The conference received a large number of scientific abstracts; in which 9 invitation reports and 24 presentations were selected to be presented in the main discussion sessions. Besides, the Conference also had 22 poster reports of young scientists to introduce the latest results in scientific research.

The conference's keynote speakers are influential researchers in the field of Chemistry such as Prof. Kazunari Domen (University of Tokyo, Japan), Prof. Licheng Sun (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden), Prof. Ki-Joon Jeon (Inha University, Korea), Prof. Bui Thi Ngoc (University of Oklahoma, USA), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tu Binh Minh (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University Hanoi), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Dang (USTH Vice Rector).

In which, at the opening session on the morning of December 9, 2022, the Conference heard Prof. Kazunari Domen (University of Tokyo, Japan) present on "Photocatalysis for water splitting reaction applied in the production of large amounts of Hydrogen from solar energy". He is one of the giants in the field of catalysis in general and photocatalysis in particular for water splitting using solar energy. Research direction of Prof. Kazunari Domen focuses on developing catalysts from materials with large reserves in nature, thereby reducing cost when applying large-scale production. These studies have great significance for the world's transition from fossil energy to renewable energy.

Next was Prof. Licheng Sun (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) with a presentation on "Catalysis for water splitting for solar fuel production: natural to artificial photosynthetic processes". He is well known for his research areas such as Photochemistry, Catalysis, Solar Cells with Photosensitive Dye and Electrochemistry. Prof. Licheng Sun has many research works on artificial photosynthesis, redox reactions, catalytic activities of the Ruthenium complex; and photovoltaic batteries for water electrolysis. He also researches solar cell systems with photosensitive dyes to investigate and improve the energy conversion efficiency of these battery systems. The research results of Prof. Licheng Sun have also contributed greatly to the knowledge base on catalysis for hydrogen production, overvoltage and electrolysis.
