The fauna and flora of Vietnam has been compiled by the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources since the end of the 20th Century, to establish a basis for planning, developing and using biological resources reasonably, and proposing effective solutions to protect biological resources from damage, in order to maintain biological diversity and resources in Vietnam and in the world.

The compilation started in 1996 according to a project which was proposed by the National Centre for Scientific Research of Vietnam (the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) and assigned to the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources to implement. It drew the participation of scientists from institutes and universities nationwide. So far, 36 volumes of fauna and flora of Vietnam (25 volumes of fauna and 11 volumes of flora, each volume is from 350 to 400 pages) have been published. The work focuses on the analysis of animals and plants according to families, varieties, species and subspecies. Each species is listed with information about its name and nomenclature of species classification; characteristic of species classification; biological and ecological properties; distribution; usage value; research sample; and remarks.

The fauna and flora of Vietnam is a scientific work based on the results of basic investigations in biological diversity and biological resource preservation in Vietnam over the past years. This scientific document inventories plants and animals in nature, and has been conducted by Vietnamese and foreign scientists since the beginning of the 20th Century. The document announces scientific and real values of plants and animals existing in Vietnam’s mainland, seas and islands. The work provides basic data on specific characteristics of natural conditions and natural resources in Vietnam, as well as other countries. It is a scientific base for economic development, exploration planning and the protection of natural biological resource in Vietnam; and basic data to use in scientific and technological research on the environment, natural history and other relevant scientific fields in Vietnam.
For the first time, Vietnam has a basic general document, which is orthodox in the potential of biological resources and diversity in Vietnam, meeting the demand of socio-economic development in renovation. The document also provides comprehensive knowledge about groups of important plants and animals both on land and at sea. This is also one of the final objectives of the basic investigation of the natural biological resources of each nation.
The publication is assessed as an event in researching biological diversity and preserving biological resources in the region and in the world. It is appreciated by the region and the world, especially international organizations such as IUCN and WWF. Conducting the research and compilation, Vietnam has expanded scientific cooperation with many countries in different continents such as the US, France, and Russia, as well as other countries in the region such as China, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, and international organizations in the field of biological and natural resources.
The work also has value in improving socio-economic effectiveness. This trustworthy document is used in research for agriculture, health, natural resource exploitation, raising and catching objects with economic value.
It affirms scientific and technological effectiveness and value. The work is a basic document about Vietnam’s fauna and flora which have high scientific value, meeting the standards of documents for biological and environmental research in Vietnam and foreign countries.
Thanks to the basic investigation and assessment of biological resources and natural biological diversity, scientists have built a collection of animal and plant samples and a valuable database in agencies (including the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, the Institute of Oceanography, the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources, and the College of Natural Sciences under Hanoi National University) to use in future research activities.
The work is appreciated for its great significance in science and technology, socio-economy and international cooperation. It can be said that it is an excellent scientific achievement in basic investigation and assessment of biological resources and the preservation of natural biological diversity in Vietnam over the past time.
