Expanding cooperation methods between Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Belarusian State University

25/03/2025
In 2024, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and Belarusian State University (BSU) officially signed a bilateral cooperation agreement with the goal of jointly developing and implementing research programs and training high-quality scientific and technological human resources in areas of strength of the two units, in line with the development and cooperation orientations of the two countries Vietnam and Belarus. In order to promote the implementation of the contents of the Agreement, on the morning of March 11, 2025, at the headquarters of VAST, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST had a meeting with the BSU delegation led by Rector Prof. Dr. Andrei Karol.

Overview of the meeting

Speaking at the meeting, President Prof. Dr. Chau Van Minh welcomed the visit of the BSU delegation and affirmed that the scientific and training cooperation relationship between the two sides has a solid foundation thanks to the long-term cooperation between VAST's affiliated units and BSU in particular, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) and Belarusian science and technology organizations in general. VAST President emphasized that Belarus has effectively supported the training of science and technology experts for Vietnam in the past and with the increasingly good diplomatic relations between the two countries as at present, in addition to continuing to implement joint scientific projects through the Belarusian Foundation for Basic Research, the re-launch and gradual promotion of previous training cooperation programs will contribute to improving the quality of human resources in science and technology, while creating favorable conditions for young scientists of both sides to access the international research environment.

Agreeing with these opinions, Prof. Dr. Andrei Karol emphasized that increasing student and postgraduate exchange not only promotes cooperation in the field of science and technology but also contributes to expanding cultural exchanges and strengthening foreign relations between the two countries. BSU was founded in 1919, formerly one of the leading universities of the Soviet Union and now maintains its role as the largest educational and training institution in Belarus, offering diverse training programs with nearly 50 schools, specialized research institutes and more than 250 specialized majors, attracting more than 60,000 students, including more than 2,000 international students. In particular, with about 30% of Belarusian PhDs and Doctors of Science trained at BSU out of a total of 50 universities in Belarus, the school is considered the cradle of training high-quality scientific human resources in Belarus. Prof. Karol said that BSU's successful coordination in implementing eight joint research projects in the period of 2022-2024 shows the effective cooperation in research between the two sides and this will be the potential for VAST and BSU to promote training cooperation in the future.

Overview of the in-depth working session

During the in-depth working session, Prof. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST, and Prof. Dr. Andrei Karol focused on discussing specific cooperation directions, including implementing joint training programs, strengthening the development of bilateral research projects, and searching for and developing scholarship programs. With 3 existing training facilities at VAST, namely Graduate University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi, and the Institute of Mathematics (including the International Center for Mathematics Research and Training sponsored by UNESCO), VAST is ready to receive students and postgraduates from BSU to study and research at the training facilities of the Academy. With diverse training programs in areas that Vietnam is currently interested in, such as new materials, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, radiation safety, etc., BSU believes that continuing training cooperation activities between the two sides has great potential. The delegates also discussed and agreed that expanding student and postgraduate exchange activities, co-supervision of doctoral theses, exchange of lecturers and recognition of equivalence of some training programs would be effective methods in educational and training cooperation. The two sides exchanged information on scientific activities in 2025 of each unit and agreed to soon organize joint activities to connect affiliated units, and expand cooperation in the coming time.
