Dietary supplement produced in Vietnam from Perna Viridis mytilus smaragdinus

On the basics of the scientific and technological project at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology level (2008-2009), the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry successfully studied the technological process to make a dietary supplement from an available marine animal, Perna Viridis mytilus smaragdinus (a kind of two-shell soft body animal), creating another useful product to benefit people’s healthcare.

Soft body animals are precious food and medicine; however, such studies are rare in Vietnam. Among soft body animals, Perna Viridis mytilus smaragdinus is found abundantly in nature and raised in large quantities in coastal Vietnam. Perna Viridis mytilus smaragdinus is the soft body animal with two shells. Whey they are small, their shells are blue and when they are mature, their shells become brownish and black, with the inner face shining. It is estimated that the output of natural mytilus smaragdinus in the clean environment in river mouths and coastal areas reaches 100 tons per year, and it is found with no limit of output in three regions, the north, central and south of Vietnam. Mytilus smaragdinus has a high content of unsaturated acid, especially acids belonging to Omega-3. In many parts of the world like Ireland, Japan, the Federation of Russia, dietary supplement products from mytilus smaragdinus have been produced and considered a dietary supplement that is capable of protecting the digestive system, preventing histamine, preventing oxidization, preventing cell division, preventing inflammation caused by bacteria and viruses, and supporting the treatment of dangerous diseases like cancer and diabetes.

In recent years, there have been many studies about chemical contents, nutritional values and biological agents in marine soft body animals. The results of the studies have opened up ways for searching and for the provision of sources of materials for industries that produce medical food or dietary supplements to serve the protection of communities’ health. In Vietnam, earlier, products from mytilus smaragdinus just used to provide food and export of preliminarily treated products, and there have not been any profound scientific works to create product with high biological active elements or dietary supplements serving the medical and pharmaceutical sector. From January 2008 to December 2009, scientists from the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology successfully carried out the project “Studying the technological process to create dietary supplements from Perna Viridis mytilus smaragdinus". This is the first study subject from mytilus smaragdinus for making dietary supplements serving life in Vietnam, headed by MA Doan Lan Phuong, with the scientific guide by Assc.Prof.PhD. Pham Quoc Long, Director of the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry and the participation of some other young researchers of the Institute.

The result of the subject can be briefed as follows: Scientists did surveys and assessed the ability to buy natural mytilus smaragdinus as well as its quality; successfully studied the stable technological process which extracts the active elements to create Vinadis dietary supplements with optimal conditions for hydrolysis reactions of mytilus smaragdinus meat. In addition, scientists built a basic standard for safe finished products and research and the effect of Vinadis products.

The technology has been applied by the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry, together with the International Medical Corporation Limited, to use Vinadis products as an important ingredient to successfully make a dietary supplement (Cot thoai vuong) that supports the reduction of bone and articulation pain, contributing to keeping bones healthy, slowing down the regression of articulation, and supporting the treatment of vertebra regression. The quality of the product has been recognized by the Food Safety Department at SDK/REg.NO:6126/2008/YT-CNTC, is now being widely circulated and highly appreciated in the domestic market.
