Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visits the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Japan’s Tsukuba Space Center
The delegation drew the participation of Prof. Chau Van Minh, member of the Party Central Committee and President of VAST; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Anh Tuan, Director of Vietnam National Satellite Center.

In the morning of October 10th, at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, Deputy Prime Minster, Nguyen Xuan Phuc proposed that the Japanese Prime Minister take care of the project of the Vietnamese Space Center and the launch of the earth observation satellite that will provide warnings of natural disaster and climate changes in Vietnam, as agreement between the two governments.
In the afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the delegation visited JAXA and Tsukuba Space Center in Ibaraki province, Japan.
Speaking at the meeting with President, Naoki Okumura and leaders of JAXA, Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the visit to Japan was in order to work with Japanese partners on major direction and measures to deepen the Vietnam – Japan relationship in different sectors including science and technology, aviation and space.
The Deputy Prime Minister appreciated effective cooperation between VAST and JAXA since 2006 in science and technology development, and space applications through activities such as small satellites and space technology human resource training, cooperation in projects on applying satellite imagery for sustainable development, disaster mitigation, coping with climate changes and creating conditions for VAST to carry out pilot scientific experiments at the KIBO laboratory of the International Space Station, in coordination with successful organization of the forum of the 15th Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APFSAF-15) and the 20th Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-20) in 2008 and 2013 in Hanoi.
The Deputy Prime Minister gave special thanks to JAXA for its support to the National Satellite Center to successfully launch PicoDragon – the first small satellite made by Vietnam and operating in the space since 2013. The cooperation between the two agencies has great significance and plays an important role in promoting space technology very new in Vietnam.
The Deputy Prime Minister asked JAXA to continue promoting cooperation with VAST in the agreed fields, especially in sharing experience in developing satellites; facilitating the launch of Vietnam’s satellite; building technical standards and traing in the management skills for the Vietnam Space Center.
Prof. Naoki Okumura confirmed the fruitful cooperation between the two agencies, especially the official visit to Tsukuba JAXA by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
The two sides agreed to review and access potentials for cooperation between the two sides in application and development of space signed between VAST and JAXA since 2006 and signed a joint declaration on strengthening partnership relations between VAST and JAXA.
Accordingly, the two sides concretized the potential for cooperation in the future in the fields of remote sensing and applications; small satellite development and applications; joint research towards the use of Japanese pilot module (KIBO); capacity building; and application of global satellite navigation system.

The delegation of 12 cadres from the National Satellite Center, who are studying at Keio University and participating in the training programme for Master of Space Technology under the Project of Vietnam Space Center, participated in the welcoming ceremony.
