21/04/2014
Red mud treatment technology is one of the priority science and technology tasks, within the framework of the project TN3 / T29 "Research on the technology of producing steel and non-baked materials from the source of red mud in the production process. Production of alumina in the Central Highlands "assigned by the Western Highlands Program 3 of the Vietnam Academy of Sciences to the Institute of Chemistry in collaboration with Thai Hung Trading Joint Stock Company. On April 10, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai led a working group to Hai Phong and Hai Duong to witness the process of refining the red mud of the Central Highlands bauxite waste into iron ore and steel.

at Thai Hung steel factory - Hai Phong

Welcoming the delegation on the side of the Academy, there was Professor. Chau Van Minh, Member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of VAST, Chairman of the Central Highlands Program 3; GS. VS Nguyen Van Hieu, Chairman of the Council of Materials Science, VAST; representative of the Steering Committee of TN 3 Program; representative of Institute of Chemistry and collective implementation of the project TN3 / T29. On the side of the delegation, there were Mr. Hoang Trung Hai, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister; representatives of the Government Office; representatives of relevant ministries and branches and leaders of Hai Phong and Hai Duong provinces

Before visiting the technology line, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai heard Dr. Vu Duc Loi - Deputy Director of the Institute of Chemistry, Chairman of the project briefed on the technology of steel production from red mud. According to Dr. Benefits and red mud in the production of alumina bauxite ore in the Central Highlands contain much higher iron content than red mud of other regions in the world. Specifically, iron content in dry red mud at Lam Dong Alumina Plant ranged from 35.8-40% (calculated by Fe) and from 51.1-56.3% (calculated according to Fe2O3), considered to be similar. With poor iron ore, it has a large volume and can be oriented for iron and steel production.

Concluding after the visit, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai highly appreciated the efforts of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Central Highlands 3 Program, the Institute of Chemistry, the collective of scientists studying the Subject. talents, as well as the help and facilitation of relevant ministries, localities and Thai Hung Trading Joint Stock Company have contributed to shortening the study time, striving to complete the research project under the direction of Prime Minister. The research results are effective and very encouraging, initially asserting the ability to apply steel production from red mud on an industrial scale, contributing to the development orientation of the mining and processing industry. Highland bauxite ore is effective and sustainable. The Deputy Prime Minister asked the VAST to collaborate with Thai Hung Trading Joint Stock Company to continue to improve the technology, complete the project so that by June 2014, it will conduct the acceptance and step into the pre-feasibility study stage. project. On that basis, the Government will consider providing an appropriate support mechanism for the project to be implemented effectively and in accordance with reality.
