Conservation programme for the spotted softshell turtle – an endangered species of Vietnam

Juvenile Spotted Softshell Turtles bred at the Me Linh Biodiversity Centre
To conserve this rare reptile species of Vietnam, the Institute of Biology has cooperated with Cologne Zoo (Germany) to implement a conservation breeding programme for the spotted softshell turtle at the Me Linh Biodiversity Centre since 2021. With four initial breeding pairs, the Centre has successfully bred more than 100 individuals, creating a source of offspring for the restoration of wild populations. In December 2023, the Me Linh Centre worked with the Quang Ninh Forest Protection Department to release 50 Spotted Softshell Turtle individuals into Yen Lap Lake in Quang Ninh province.
To contribute to the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 (under Decision149/QD-TTg dated January 28, 2022 of the Prime Minister), the Institute of Biology continues to strengthen conservation programmes for wildlife species, especially endemic, endangered, rare and precious animals. In October 2025, the Institute of Biology cooperated with relevant authorities of Phu Tho and Ninh Binh provinces to release 50 spotted softshell turtle individuals into the Tam Chuc Lake area, located within the Tam Chuc National Tourism Area in Ninh Binh province. The release of the spotted softshell turtle not only carries practical significance for biodiversity conservation but also spreads a message about the community’s responsibility in preserving and promoting ecological values associated with spiritual cultural heritage and green, sustainable economic development.
