On December 27th, VAST held a conference to review works in 2014 and carry out plan for 2015.

The event drew the participation of Pham Van Duc, vice president of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; representatives from the Office of the Government, the Central Organization Commission, the Central Commission for Inspection, the Government Inspectorate, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Education and Training.


Representatives from VAST included Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, secretary of VAST Party Committee and president of VAST; Prof. Duong Ngoc Hai, vice secretary of VAST Party Committee and vice president of VAST; Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, member of VAST Standing Committee and vice president of VAST; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Van Kiem, head of VAST Party Committee’s Organizing Board and vice president of VAST; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Duy Ngo, permanent vice secretary of VAST Party Committee, and former vice presidents of VAST. The event also drew the participation of the VAST Party Committee Executive Board, VAST Trade Union Executive Board, secretary of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, leaders of units under VAST and staff who obtained outstanding achievements in 2014.

In 2014, VAST continued to promote the role of the largest science and technology agency in Vietnam through the implementation of important science and technology tasks assigned by the Prime Minister and tasks in the state’s key science and technology programmes, basic research programme, programme on science and technology for socio-economic development in the Central Highlands (Central Highlands 3 Programme), the space science and technology programme, project on master plan on the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, project on building a collection of national precious objects on Vietnamese nature, and project on strengthening earthquake observation network for earthquake and tsunami warning in Vietnam. VAST also carried out two key academy-level projects for economic development and national defence.


With continuous efforts, VAST has obtained important achievements. For example, VAST put into stable operation for VNREDSat-1 from September 2013 and is carrying out a project VNREDSat-1B with Belgium; established the Institute of Science and Technology according to Prime Minister’s Decision 1691/QĐ-TTg dated Sep.22, 2014; had three magazines approved  SCOPUS standard with increasing influence index; discovered 76 new animals and plants, experiential products such as slow-released fertilizer for several plants in the Central Highlands; and mastered unmanned aerial vehicle technology. Especially, the number of articles meeting SCI and SCI-E increased 20.2% in comparison with that in 2013. The VAST’s important event in 2014 was that Professor Chau Van Minh, president of VAST was elected as Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.


As of December 2014, more than 4,000 staff have been working at 52 units under VAST. Despite of difficulties, most of officials and employees of VAST have made their effort in scientific research, helping the academy complete the task.


In addition, the Academy established three advanced centers in the 2013-2016 period in the field of basic research on natural sciences and strong scientific specialities to promptly bring the Institute of Science and Technology to operate in 2015. The Academy is also building the Vietnam National Museum of Nature at Quoc Oai ecological zone.


Also in the framework of the conference, participants heard illustration reports by units under VAST. They also witnessed the signing ceremony for the memorandum of cooperation on transferring technology of producing iron ore and unburned materials from red mud waste between the Institute of Chemistry under VAST and Thai Hung Commercial Joint-stock Company.

Concluding the conference, to honour groups and individuals that obtained outstanding achievements in 2014, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, president of VAST presented VAST emulation flag to five units and certificates of merit to nine units, certificates of merit to staff of two rooms, the title “outstanding labour group” to 17 rooms, the title “VAST-level emulation cadre” to 7 individuals and certificates of merit to 15 individuals.
