Conference on “Materials Science for the Cause of National Modernization and International Integration”
Attending the Conference were Prof. Dr. Le Truong Giang - Vice President of VAST; Dr. Nguyen Tien Tai - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Economic and Technical Sectors, Ministry of Science and Technology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Tien Dung - Director of Department of Application and Development of Technology with leaders of affiliated units and scientists of VAST.
The Organizing Committee of the Conference includes: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem - Chairman of the Scientific Council of Materials Science; Prof. Dr. Thai Hoang - Vice Chairman of the Scientific Council of Materials Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Dinh Phuong - Vice Chairman of the Scientific Council of Materials Science, scientists who are members of the Scientific Council of Materials Science.
In 1975, Vietnam Academy of Science (now Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) was established by the Government Council on the basis of the Scientific Research Center under the State Committee for Science and Technology (now Ministry of Science and Technology), with the mission of being a national scientific agency, acting as the core for the development of the fields of natural sciences and technology. Towards the 50th anniversary of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Scientific Council of Materials Science (VAST03) organized the "Conference on Materials Science for the cause of national modernization and international integration", reporting an overview of outstanding research results in the period 2020-2025.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem emphasized that in the series of conferences celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Materials Science sector organized the first conference, becoming the opening event. This perhaps also reflects the important mission of the Materials Science sector - a field with a foundation in Physics, Chemistry, Mineralogy and Metallurgy, playing a core role for many advanced technologies.
In the current context, the development of science and technology is receiving special attention from the Party, State and Government. A clear demonstration is Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo, issued on December 22, 2024, identifying science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as the driving force for national breakthroughs. Then, on January 9, 2025, Resolution 03/NQ-CP of the Government: Promulgating the Government's Action Program to implement Resolution 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation. In particular, on January 13, 2025, at Dien Hong Hall, the National Assembly, the Politburo and the Secretariat held a National Conference on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, emphasizing the highest political determination in promoting the strong development of science and technology. “With these important decisions, the bottlenecks and bottlenecks in the country's science and technology activities are gradually being removed. From the Resolution of the National Assembly, we will have Decrees of the Government and guiding circulars from ministries and branches, creating favorable conditions for the development of this field. Therefore, our conference today not only takes place in the conditions of "favorable time, favorable location, and favorable people" but also receives strong support from major policies and guidelines. The conference "Materials Science for the cause of national modernization and international integration" was organized with careful preparation from editing, printing documents to implementing the content of the yearbook with 50 reports - a number of special significance on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. These are overview reports from eight units operating in the field of Materials Science, demonstrating the development and important contributions of the industry in the past time. "Over the past time," affirmed Professor Nguyen Quang Liem.
Six typical overview reports were presented by the following units: Institute of Materials Science, Institute of Tropical Technology, Institute of Chemistry, Center for High Technology Research and Development, Institute of Applied Materials Science and Nha Trang Institute of Technology Research and Application.
The scientific and technological research achievements of the Materials Science sector have been summarized in detail in the “Collection of reports on the Materials Science Conference serving the cause of national modernization and international integration”, focusing on areas such as: Renewable energy materials and technology; optoelectronic and photonic materials; electronic and electromagnetic materials, plasma technology; medical - biomedical materials, health care and agriculture; metal materials and anti-corrosion technology; mineral processing and environmental protection and materials serving national defense and security.
The Organizing Committee of the Conference selected 50 typical reports, including innovative research directions. In particular, some reports also suggest new directions that the materials science industry can implement in the future. According to Professor Nguyen Quang Liem, along with traditional directions that have achieved many achievements, some advanced materials science and technology issues should be researched at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, such as: Developing materials technology and CO₂ conversion; Research on the effective use of rare earth resources; Developing technology and equipment for producing nanoporous silica from rice husks; Materials from Vietnamese resources and developing the marine economy; Research on the application orientation of thermoelectric and piezoelectric materials; Technology of new generation semiconductor materials, electronic components, electromagnetics, optoelectronics and photonics for special applications; Development of plasma technology applications; Development of data science on materials and application of artificial intelligence to design and predict material properties.
Speaking at the Conference, Dr. Nguyen Tien Tai said that the Conference is not only an opportunity to summarize scientific and technological tasks but also an opportunity to look back at high-quality research achievements, ranging from civilian applications to strategic issues serving national defense. Dr. Nguyen Tien Tai also shared more about the new points of Resolution No. 193/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of special mechanisms and policies to create breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, specifically: Establishing and operating enterprises from the results of scientific research and technological development; Accepting risks in scientific research and technological development; Allocating expenditures in scientific research and technological development.
The Conference was a great success, demonstrated through the quality of documents, scientific reports as well as the organization. This affirms the careful and scientific preparation of the Organizing Committee along with the support of management agencies, especially the close direction of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. In addition, international cooperation is also an important factor, helping the Vietnamese materials science industry access advanced knowledge, and gain professional and material support from foreign partners. The conference is not only an opportunity to summarize research results but also opens up new opportunities, helping scientists continue to contribute to the science and technology career of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, contributing to the modernization of the country and enhancing the position of Vietnam's science and technology in the international arena.
