Conference “50 years of achievements and challenges in marine science and technology research”
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Lam - Chairman of the Council of Marine Science and Technology delivered the opening speech at the Conference.
Speaking at the opening of the Conference, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Lam - Chairman of the Council of Marine Science and Technology, VAST affirmed: “Marine science and technology is an important part of national science and technology, playing a key role in socio-economic development in general and marine economy in particular. Development and application of marine science and technology is one of the three strategic breakthroughs stated in Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated October 22, 2018 of the Party on “Strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, vision to 2045”. The conference with the theme “50 years of achievements and challenges in marine science and technology research” aims at the main goal: Creating an academic forum for managers, scientists and businesses at home and abroad to discuss, share information, experience and ideas for cooperation in research, application of science and technology to serve sustainable development towards developing a blue marine economy in the East Sea and protecting the future of the ocean”.
The Conference Organizing Committee received 65 scientific works, including 4 presentations and 30 works published in the Conference Proceedings, 18 articles published in the special issue of the prestigious international journal Regional Studies in Marine Science and 13 articles in the Journal of Marine Science and Technology.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Deputy Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences said: “It can be said that Vietnam's marine space, especially the East Sea, is not only a sacred part of the Fatherland's territorial waters but also a priceless resource, a gateway connecting Vietnam with the region and the world. In the context of climate change and global environmental challenges, marine science and technology research is becoming more urgent for sustainable development. The conference brought together leading experts from many fields: Marine biology - ecology; marine chemistry and biochemistry; marine geology - geophysics, marine environment, energy and marine physics. This is a valuable opportunity for scientists to exchange knowledge, share research results and promote new scientific cooperation".
At the plenary session of the Conference, chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Nhu Trung, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc Thanh, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Dinh Cham, Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Thi Mai Huong, scientists and managers in the field of marine science and technology presented 05 overview papers on typical research results and development orientations for the industry in the next period, such as: "Application of marine science and technology into practice to contribute to socio-economic development and protection of sea and island sovereignty"; "Promoting basic research and investigation on the sea, contributing to socio-economic development and protection of sea and island sovereignty"; "Current status and orientations for the development of marine science and technology to serve basic investigation of marine resources and environment"; "Contributions to marine science and technology in the 65-year journey of establishment and development of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment" (now the Institute of Science and Technology for Energy and Environment); “Earthquake monitoring, reporting and tsunami warning system in Vietnam: Current status, challenges and solutions”.
The overview reports have comprehensively reflected the outstanding achievements and development trends of Vietnam's marine science and technology in recent times. This is an important scientific basis contributing to planning a sustainable development strategy for the marine economy in the new period.
At the thematic sessions, chaired by Associate Professor Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Duc Thinh, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Dr. Hoang Xuan Ben, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Huu Thien, scientists presented and discussed 17 scientific reports, focusing on many areas such as blue ocean economy, biodiversity, resource conservation models, coastal flow research, underwater communication techniques, port environmental treatment, as well as exploitation of biological compounds from marine microorganisms... The scientific reports not only clarify the factors affecting sustainable development but also propose solutions for applying science and technology in protecting and exploiting marine resources effectively.
Through the Conference, scientists and managers of the Marine Science and Technology sector proposed a number of orientations for key research topics in the coming period, including: Promoting the establishment of strong scientific groups in marine science and technology with sufficient capacity to master technologies related to deep-sea and offshore investigation and research; promoting deep-sea and offshore research and marine forecasting research; continuing to implement highly effective applied research to serve socio-economic development, focusing on models and technology transfer to localities, businesses and communities; strengthening international cooperation with specialized marine research institutes, prioritizing traditional partners.
