On behalf of VAST’s Board of Directors, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh gave an overview of the process of establishment, construction and development of VAST for nearly 50 years. Up to now, the research staff of VAST is about 3500 staff, including nearly 250 Professors, Associate Professors and nearly 1000 PhDs. During nearly 50 years of construction and development, generations of leaders and scientists of VAST have always tried and actively implemented the guidelines of scientific and technological development of the Party and the State, achieved many valuable scientific research and technological development results, making important contributions to the cause of socio-economic development and national defense and security. Many scientific works have been applied in practice, bringing high efficiency and winning many domestic and international awards that have been widely applied.
With the main functions of basic research, basic investigation, technological development, the VAST’s activities span all fields of natural science and technology. From basic research knowledge, basic survey data, the staff and scientists of the Institute have developed many technologies and products, applied in the fields of industry, agriculture, medicine, defense, security and civil, contributing to socio-economic development, advising the Government in solving arising problems, providing scientific arguments for development planning, environmental protection and disaster prevention for localities throughout the country.
VAST has developed space science in Vietnam and is also the leading unit in the country in the field of marine research, marine biodiversity assessment, investigation and survey of marine factors and geology. Scientific data, survey trips and scientific activities have contributed to affirming Vietnam's maritime and island sovereignty and establishing the sovereignty of 47 underground features in the East Sea, recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization.
VAST’s station network includes hundreds of stations serving the monitoring of natural environmental factors, providing a series of data on rational use of resources, disaster prevention and environmental protection, which is an important data for local and national socio-economic development. The Center for DNA Examination of Martyrs' Remains with Missing Information has successfully completed the assessment, matching of information and identification of martyrs across the country under the Government's Project 150.
VAST also performs well the role of advising the Government on science and technology in major issues arising in the process of economic development and developing national strategies on science and technology such as the National Strategy on Industrial Revolution 4.0; National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence; National strategy for space technology development.
In addition to scientific research and technological development, the Institute also pays great attention to the training of high-quality human resources for the country, and at the same time closely links scientific and technological research and training in the spirit of the Resolution of the 27th Central Committee on building a contingent of intellectuals in the period of accelerating industrialization, modernization of the country.
VAST also actively advises, coordinates and participates with Party Committees in the formulation, preliminary and summary of the implementation of Party resolutions, especially Resolution 45 on "Continuing to build and promote the role of intellectuals to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable development in the new period" of the Executive Committee Central Committee at the VIII General Conference, XIII.

Participants also listened to 06 thematic reports of scientists of VAST to better understand the activities of VAST and the insightful comments of leaders of ministries, departments and branches.
Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia affirmed that, over the journey of nearly 50 years of construction and development, with glorious and very proud achievements, VAST has always been a leading wing, holding a leading position in research, especially basic research, transfer and train scientific and technological human resources to serve the cause of national construction and development and national defense.
He suggested that VAST should inherit and promote the achievements and continue to pay attention to the good implementation of a number of contents: Thoroughly understand and well implement the Resolution of the XIII Party Congress, resolutions, directives and conclusions of the Central Committee and the Politburo, The XIII Secretariat in the field of science and technology, innovation, building and developing the role of intellectuals and scientists to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable national development in the new period, effectively implementing VAST Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045. Special attention is paid to investment, nurturing and developing high-quality scientific and technological human resources, meeting national development requirements and defending the Fatherland in the new period. Strengthen domestic and international cooperation in science, technology and innovation; attach importance to receiving and mastering new technologies, high technologies, core technologies, source technologies and spearhead technologies, contributing to improving the nation's potential and autonomy capacity. Attach importance to Party building, especially Party building in politics, ideology and ethics. Strengthen the coordination between VAST and ministries, central and local branches in order to improve the capacity, quality and efficiency of consultancy and advising the Party and State on science and technology and innovation; propaganda information on scientific development and innovation.
He also believed that VAST in particular and the country's science and technology in general would have new developments in both quantity and quality, contributing to the successful implementation of the Party's resolutions.
