On February 14, 2017, a ceremony was held at the great hall, Building A1 of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to congratulate 3 scientists from the Institute of Mathematics who received Ho Chi Minh Award in science and technology. During the ceremony, VAST certificates of merit were also presented to the Institute of Mathematics and 2 magazines: Vietnam Journal of Mathematics and Acta Mathematica Vietnamica.
Attendants at the ceremony included Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, Party Central Committee member, VAST President; Prof. Dr.Sc. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Van Kiem, and Prof. Dr. Phan Ngoc Minh, VAST Vice Presidents; those from VAST Standing Party Committee; President of the VAST Trade Union; Secretary of VAST Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; representatives from the VAST President Assistant Board; leaders from the 2 magazines of Vietnam Journal of Mathematics and Acta Mathematica Vietnamica; and officers from the Institute of Mathematics.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh stressed that this was the third of 5 times the Ho Chi Minh Award was presented to professors from the Institute of Mathematics. “The impressive achievements are brought about by the fact that leaders and scientists from the Institute of Mathematics always treasure the quality of scientific research, and consider regularly increasing the quality of scientific research the most important task of the Institute,” he said. “The awards are a special honour of the 3 professors, and the honour and pride of the Institute of Mathematics and of the whole VAST.”
He congratulated Professors Ngo Viet Trung, Nguyen Tu Cuong and Le Tuan for receiving the Ho Chi Minh Award in science and technology, and presented them flowers as sincere thanks to the professors’ contributions to the development of VAST.

During late 2016 and early 2017, besides the Ho Chi Minh Award in science and technology, the Institute of Mathematics reported other special successes. Magazine Acta Mathematica Vietnamica was listed to the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) – the journal of ISI. The magazine, initiated by Professors Le Van Thiem and Hoang Tuy, was published for the first time in 1964 under the management of the Institute of Mathematics. Two first editors-in-chief, Professors Le Van Thiem and Hoang Tuy, were followed by Professors Ngo Viet Trung and Nguyen Tu Cuong. All editors-in-chief were presented with the Ho Chi Minh Award.
The Vietnam Journal of Mathematics was also listed in ESCI. Managed by the Institute of Mathematics, it was published in 1973 for the first time under the leadership of Professors Le Van Thiem and Hoang Tuy as editors-in-chief. Since 1991, the magazine has been published in the English language by VAST in collaboration with the Mathematical Society. Generations of editors-in-chief are leading professors of the Institute of Mathematics, including Professors Dinh Van Huynh, Nguyen Khoa Son, Nguyen Tu Cuong and the current editor-in-chief, Professor Hoang Xuan Phu.
Since 2009, VAST has carried out plans to increase the quality of VAST magazines. Under the direct leadership of VAST Vice President Nguyen Dinh Cong, together with the efforts of the Board of Editors, especially editors-in-chief – Professors Hoang Xuan Phu and Nguyen Tu Cuong, the quality of the magazines has been increased remarkably, gaining new achievements that are far greater than in previous years. In late 2011, magazine Acta Mathematica Vietnamica became Vietnam’s first magazine listed Scopus. In 2013, the two magazines were chosen by Springer publishing house for cooperation in publishing work. In 2014, the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics was listed in Scopus. In 2016, Acta Mathematica Vietnamica was ranked to Q2 magazine by Scimago. The latest great achievement of the two magazine is to be listed to ESCI, which shows that VAST investment for the 2 magazines is accurate.
Being the governing body of magazine Acta Mathematica Vietnamica, as well as efficient supporting agency for Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematics is proud of the achievements gained by the two magazines. In addition, the institute has gained additional achievements. In 2016 alone, the institute announced 80 scientific press articles on international magazines, including 25 SCI and 34 SCI-E articles. It has carried out 25 NAFOSTED projects and 6 projects at VAST level. Its young staff reveals their potential. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Pham Hoang Hiep, for instance, was recognized as a member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in the 2016-2021 period, while postgraduate Do Thai Duong received a special scholarship from International Mathematical Union (IMU) for studying in Vietnam.
