Ceremony awards insignia and announces decision on appointing USTH Acting Rector

On August 22, 2018, the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology held a solemn ceremony to award insignia for Prof. Patrick Boiron - Principal and Prof. Radjesvarane Alexandre, Head of Research, Innovation and Transfer of Technology, of the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi when the two professors ended their working terms; and presented the decision on appointing the USTH Acting Rector title to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh since September 1, 2018. Attending  the ceremony were Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, Party Central Committee member, Secretary of the VAST Party Committee and VAST President; Mr. Olivier Sigaud, First Counselor of the French Embassy in Hanoi; VAST Vice Presidents: Prof. Dr.Sc. Nguyen Dinh Cong; Assoc Prof. Dr. Phan Vam Kiem; and leaders from the departments assisting VAST President and staff of the USTH.

In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, representatives of the Organizing Committee announced the following decisions:


• Decision 1392/QD-VHL dated July 25, 2018 by the VAST President on awarding insignia to Prof. Dr. Patrick Boiron, USTH Rector, for his contributions to the construction and development of VAST.
• Decision 1393/QD-VHL dated July 25, 2018 by the VAST President on awarding insignia to Prof. Dr. Radjesvarane Alexandre for his contribution to the building and development of VAST.
• Decision 1486/QD-VHL dated August 15, 2018 by the VAST President on appointing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh, USTH Vice Rector, as USTH Acting Rector.

Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh highly appreciated Prof. Patrick Boiron’s and Prof. Radjesvarane Alexandre’s contributions and expressed his thanks to the two professors for their great contributions to the cause of construction and development of USTH in particular and for VAST in general; and congratulated them on successfully realising their tasks before receiving VAST insignias. He added he hoped that the two professors will continue to work well in their new positions and continue to be interested in the development of USTH.


On this occasion, Mr. Minh congratulated Assoc. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh for being appointed USTH Acting Principal. Recognising that this is a difficult and challenging task, Mr. Minh expressed his belief that, with many years of experience as Deputy Head of the Institute on Specialised Research, nearly 2 years of experience as USTH Vice Rector, her high sense of responsibility, determination, Ms Mai will complete her duties in a new position, continue to contribute to the building of the USTH to develop sustainably and become a world-class research university.

During the ceremony, Prof. Patrick Boiron said that it was time for him to step into a new phase after finishing a long journey as a lecturer and a researcher. “I started my career in 1980 at the Pasteur Institute, followed at Lyon University 1 and my last stop at USTH,” he said. “My career is marked with success, sometimes with difficulties in modest and sometimes ambitious projects. I always try to do my best and devote to science and to society. USTH is the last chapter of my career. Today, as I am about to finish my term at USTH, I am truly relieved to see a dynamic USTH and developing with new success. I would like to share with you and my colleagues that the progressive development of the USTH today will not be marked without the support of agencies and departments.”


He expressed his thanks to VAST, especially Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, VAST President, who always supported the development of USTH since the day he came to work in the USTH, especially since the USTH was governed by the VAST. He also thanked VAST leaders, USTH lecturers and staff, the Ministry of Education and Training, the French Embassy in Vietnam and French and Vietnamese agencies for assisting his work. He went on to say that there is a lot of work to do to continue to develop the USTH in the near future. Despite many difficulties, he said he always believed that the USTH will continue to grow in the future.

At the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh addressed her sincere thanks to the VAST Party Committee, VAST President Chau Van Minh and leaders for believing her in a new task. She stressed that to develop USTH with the aim of becoming a world-class research university, there remains a lot of difficult and challenging work. She expressed her hope that she will continue to receive the guidance of VAST President, leaders, departments, the French Embassy in Vietnam, French universities and research organizations. She pledge to continue to work with USTH staff to overcome all difficulties to complete the task and the responsibility assigned in the new position.
