During the meeting, the Institute of Space Technology introduced the work on providing satellite VNREDSat-1 images and international cooperation activities in the framework of UNESCAP to put satellite imaging, especially Radar satellite images; process images, develop flooding maps to promptly serve the management and identification of the level of natural disasters, especially during the recent historic flooding in Quang Ninh Province. The delegation of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention realised that VAST owns great potentials in providing useful information for the prevention of natural disasters.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Tran Quang Hoai proposed management staff and technicians from the two sides continue to deepen cooperation in space image interpretation and technology transfer, helping the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention in its management, administration and mitigation of risks for natural disasters-affected people.

The two sides exchanged detailed information on the application of remote sensing technology for the prevention of natural disasters which included experience of the units in the application of remote sensing technology for management and administration; the possibility of using remote sensing to respond in real time for disaster prevention; the accuracy of the information derived from satellite images allowing the identification in the scale at residential areas, villages, communes or districts...; infrastructure, minimum human resources for application of remote sensing technology; remote sensing image sources able to be collected (free or commercially bought ...); applications for estimates of damage in human lives and property, plans for evacuation of residents and properties...

After the meeting, the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention visited the Center for Control and Exploitation of Small Satellite - Institute of Space Technology.

On August 17, 2015, the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention delivered an official dispatch No. 127/TWPCTT thanking VAST for sending a group of experts from VAST Institute of Space Technology to participate in applications of space technology in assessing damage caused by rain and floods in Quang Ninh Province from July 24-31, 2015. The group of experts successfully completed their missions, promptly providing flood mapping products for the support of the prevention of rain and floods in Quang Ninh Province. The Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention also proposed VAST continue to support the committee for human resources and satellite image data in case of natural disasters in the future.
