Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha honored at Vietnam Glory 2024

On May 19, 2024, in Hanoi, Vietnam General Confederation of Labor solemnly organized the program "Glory in Vietnam" 2024 with the theme "20 years of inspiring Vietnam's strength". Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha, Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), was honored to be among 20 collectives and individuals recognized at the program.

Pioneer in marine toxin research in Vietnam

Pioneer in marine toxicology and food safety research in Vietnam and the Western Pacific region, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha has more than 30 years pursuing this field. These are the first studies on marine toxins in Vietnam and the Western Pacific region, providing a reliable basis for authorities in quality management and ensuring food hygiene and safety, and providing knowledge to respond to new situations about the risk of food poisoning. They are also an important premise for the direction of applied medical research, developing appropriate treatment regimens for poisoning cases. With continuous efforts, the direction of marine toxin research in Vietnam is now recognized by the world scientific community. Her experience and knowledge in this field are highly appreciated, valuable for reference and affirm the importance of science in Vietnam's dialogue at international forums.

Strengthening the promotion of national sea and island sovereignty

As Director of the Oceanographic Museum, Institute of Oceanography, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha is the person who directs the development of plans and renovates the activities in order to protect the sovereignty of the Fatherland seas and islands, especially for the Paracel and Spratly islands. The exhibition area "Paracel-Spratly Island Sea Resources" introduces the abundance of marine resources of the two archipelagos and displays the French-era marine map "Presence in the East Sea". The Museum of Oceanography has built many creative displays which are special attraction for students. 

As Chairman of the National Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Vietnam, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha has repeatedly shared experiences, initiatives and results on marine scientific and technological research of Vietnam at international and regional conferences. So far, Assoc. TS. Ha is the only Vietnamese elected and became a member of the Legal-Technical Committee of the Ocean Floor Power Authority (2023-2027), invited to be an independent international expert in scientific advice on UN decisions on resource exploitation activities, minerals and environmental protection of deep waters outside national jurisdiction. Her activities in the international arena have contributed to enhancing Vietnam's image and position as an active and responsible member of the international community; at the same time, affirming Vietnam's contribution to promoting legal order at sea, thereby contributing to protecting national sovereignty and interests. 

With achievements in contributing to social security; sustainable marine economic development; ensuring national security and defense, sovereignty and interests at sea, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha is honored to be awarded the Vietnam Kovalevskaia Award in 2023 and is one of 20 collectives and individuals honored in this year's Vietnam Glory program.
