Application of AI, IoT, automation combining Physics - Chemistry - Biology technology in water and wastewater treatment systems
The event drew the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Tien Dung, Head of Technology Application and Deployment Department, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST); Dr. Do Hoang Tung, Dr. Ngo Manh Tien, International Center for Physics - Institute of Physics; Mr. Truong Hong Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Astec Technology Group; and researchers and business representatives.
Overview of the seminar
At the seminar, the participants discussed and proposed directions for cooperation in research and application of artificial intelligence, IoT, Automation technology combined with Physics - Chemistry - Biology technologies to improve the efficiency of energy use, save treatment chemicals, ensure the quality of wastewater after treatment, as well as reduce the dependence of the treatment process on staff and operators, and accessing modern and advanced water treatment systems of the industry 4.0 generation in the world.
Presenting a report on “The current state of technology and operation of wastewater treatment systems in Vietnam”, MA. Nguyen Quang Hung, PetroVietnam Chemicals and Services Corporation JSC (PVChem) said that for the current state of wastewater treatment technology, applying AI, IoT and automation can solve problems such as ensuring the quality of water after treatment meeting Vietnam Standards; saving energy; saving consumable chemicals; reducing dependence on operators; and easily checking, controlling through friendly and easy-to-use interfaces on smartphones.

MA. Pham Van Anh, Vietnam Water and Environmental Sanitation Company introduced the application of membrane filters in the treatment of water as well as wastewater. For wastewater treatment systems, the application of membrane filtration (MBR) is a treatment technology that combines membrane technology with aerobic biological wastewater treatment technology. This is considered a relatively new wastewater treatment technology in Vietnam, especially suitable for water reuse applications. MBR wastewater treatment systems often use low pressure membranes (MF or UF) to separate liquids. At the same time, MA. Pham Van Anh also presented the big difference between MBR membrane technology and other traditional wastewater treatment technologies as well as the main advantages and disadvantages of this type of membrane. In addition, he also shared more about the type of flat sheet membrane Yuasa - Japan that VESA is applying in a number of key projects such as Da Nang International Airport and APEC Convention Center.
Dr. Pham Ngoc Minh, Institute of Information Technology (IT), VAST, introduced the IoT and SCADA systems that integrate automation and intelligence of water treatment systems. SCADA monitors and controls Cau Nguyet water plant, one of the major projects by experts of the Institute of Information Technology, in collaboration with technology corporation Astec Group, research, design and successful implementation (in 2010) on the technology platform of leading technology firms in the world such as Siemens, ABB. In 2017, the Institute of Information Technology collaborated with VESA to design and deploy the application of distributed wastewater treatment technology. This was one of the key projects to prepare for the 2017 APEC Summit in Da Nang. In addition, an automatic wastewater monitoring system based on IoT technology allows managers and operators to monitor online water quality measurement data via the internet, using web interfaces and applications on Android mobile devices.
Dr. Pham Ngoc Minh introduces projects to apply IoT and Automation in water and wastewater treatment
In the presentation "Artificial intelligence and intelligent treatment solutions to water & wastewater treatment applications", Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, Technical Director of Xylem USA Company, showed that today Artificial Intelligence makes a very active contribution in the field of water supply and treatment. Thanks to AI, it is possible to optimize the wastewater treatment stations and water supply in the direction of minimizing energy and chemical consumption costs; reduce dependence on the experience of operators, as well as support maintenance decision-making thanks to the predictive ability of the system. The application of this technology also opens up a business trend under the "profit sharing" model in the future with the water treatment industry predicted to have tens of billions of dollars in revenue (according to Frost and Sullivan 2020).
The seminar ended with the expectation of providing a lot of multi-disciplinary information, helping scientists and businesses to cooperate in order to bring out research results, apply new technology and use it more widely to further fulfill the goal of improving the efficiency and quality of current water treatment systems in Vietnam, meeting modern and advanced water treatment system standards of the industry 4.0 generation in the world.
