2. Successful studies on SARS–CoV-2 virus
* Culturing and isolating SARS–CoV-2 virus in the laboratory
On February 7, 2020, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Ministry of Health) announced the successful culture and isolation of the SARS–CoV-2 virus in the laboratory. This success facilitates rapid testing of SARS–CoV-2 virus infections and suspects. From this result, every day Vietnam will be able to test thousands of patient samples in case of need.
* Researching and manufacturing kits to diagnose SARS–CoV-2 virus
On March 5, 2020, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a press conference to announce the research results of manufacturing of realtime RT PCR reagents for SARS–CoV-2 virus detection. At that time, Vietnam was on of a few countries that succeeded in manufacturing the SARS–CoV-2 virus diagnostic kits.
3. Successfully build up the flight control technology and recover the stratosphere balloon
Project VT-CN.04 / 17-20 under the National Science and Technology Program on Space Technology in the 2016-2020 period “Research on technology access using hot air balloons dropped in the stratosphere technology integration of information transceiver station to monitor, navigate, search and rescue and measure the physical parameters of the atmospheric layer” is lead by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Quang - Center for Informatics and Computation of VAST Vietnam Forest Science and Technology. The purpose of the project is to research, manufacture and test stratospheric balloons carrying a system of equipment used in air sensing measurement; communication of environmental sensors, natural disaster warning; monitoring and navigation for long-distance ships, people or vehicles; emergency search and rescue location indicator. After 3 years of research and testing, scientists have the ability to deploy a large and low-cost network of Internet of Things (IoT) to serve the rescue purpose on the sea and mountain, monitoring offshore fishing vessels, collect flash floods, landslides, forest fires information, and navigation communications for fishing vessels without the need for expensive and energy intensive satellite transmission equipment.

4. Hand over the draft of Vietnam's National History
On November 12, 2020, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a ceremony to receive the draft of the Ministry of History of Vietnam. This is the product of the project "Researching and compiling the Vietnamese History" (also known as National History), implemented since 2015, including 25 volumes of Common History (including 13 historical volumes of Vietnam in ancient times - Middle Ages and 12 episodes of near-modern period) and 5 Chronicles of historical events (in which 3 volumes in ancient period - medieval period, 2 volumes near-modern period).
Field of applied research
5. Viettel makes the first 5G call on a self-made device
On January 17, 2020, under the witness of the Minister of Information - Communications and Minister of Science and Technology, Viettel Group made the first video call using a data connection. 5G on gNodeB transceivers researched and manufactured by Viettel, including hardware and software equipment. Currently, there are 5 companies in the world that have successfully produced network equipment for 5G including: Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Samsung and ZTE. Viettel will be the 6th supplier in the world to produce this device. Among the above providers, only Viettel is both a telecom operator and capable of manufacturing network equipment. Viettel, along with 2 othercarriers VinaPhone and MobiFone, are currently implementing commercial testing of 5G services in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
6. Bluezone application is widely deployed
On April 18, 2020, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Health held the opening ceremony of the Bluezone application platform for community protection and epidemic prevention COVID-19. This is a solution that applies Bluetooth low energy (BLE) location technology. When the smartphones have the same Bluezone app installed, they detect each other within a distance of 2m and remember themselves. By mid-November 2020, more than 23 million Vietnamese people have installed and used Bluezone.
7. Completion of the protection embankment of Hoan Kiem Lake with technology of thin-walled non-metallic reinforced concrete, modular hollow block by Hoang Duc Thao, General Director of Busadco
On August 20, 2020, at The Huc bridge (Hoan Kiem lake, Hanoi), Vietnam Science and Technology Joint Stock Company (Busadco), Hoan Kiem Lake embankment construction unit, has officially completed the construction of a lake embankment with a total length of nearly 1,500 meters after 65 days and nights of construction, two months ahead of schedule. Especially, Hoan Kiem Lake embankment has been researched very carefully and meticulously to produce the best quality products in terms of technique, art, spiritual culture and environmental protection.
Field of international cooperation
8. Vietnamese scientists participate in an experiment published in Nature
For the first time, Vietnamese physicists are allowed to co-author the publication of a groundbreaking work in Nature, the world's leading academic journal. That is the international experiment T2K with the scientific paper "Constraint of the phase parameter violates the matter - antimatter symmetry in the neutrino oscillation" published on Nature on April 16, 2020. This experiment was carried out in Japan with the international cooperation of about 600 physicists and engineers with more than 60 research organizations from 12 countries around the world. Vietnam is the only Asian country to participate in this experiment outside of the host country Japan, represented by the Neutrino research group of the Quy Nhon Interdisciplinary Educational and Scientific Research Institute.
