Advances in Natural Sciences: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ANSN) returns to Web of Science

24/10/2019
ANSN Journal (https://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2043-6262) is owned by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), in collaboration with IOP Publishing House (UK). The journal published Vol 1 in 2010. In December 2012, it was indexed in the Scopus database after only 3 years of publication. This was the result of the exertion and dedication of Acad. Nguyen Van Hieu, editor-in-chief of the journal, members of the Editorial Board, collaborators, authors and experts of IOP Publishing House.

In December 2015, ANSN Journal was assessed and listed in SCI-E journals by Thomson Reuters, becoming the first ISI magazine in Vietnam, with an influence coefficient of IF 1,581. Published by the Web of Science just 6 years after publication is a short span of time measured from the international perspective, for an international journal. However, due to the plagiarism-checking techniques of the manuscript before publication of articles and the weak internationality shown by the participation of too many Vietnamese members in the Editorial Board, in December 2016 ANSN was removed from the index of Web of Science. This is an unfortunate and unexpected incident, also a lesson for the Journal when participating in the system of prestigious international journals, showing that the possibility of removal from the Web of Science can happen to any SCI-E journal.

Recognizing the need to publish according to international standards so that the Journal can exist and develop in the environment of highly competitive international scientific publications, Acad. Nguyen Van Hieu asked VAST President to appoint Prof. Nguyen Quang Liem as the editor-in-chief of the Journal to continue leading the journal publication. A number of necessary works have been carried out consistently: Many excellent international scientists were invited to the Editorial Council and contribute good articles to the Journal; Key members of the Editorial Council were assigned with reasonable responsibility; Scholar One Manuscripts professional software was used to control the process of accepting articles, inviting international reviewers and interacting with the authors; IThenticate software was used to check the degree of duplication of the manuscript with other publications to eliminate plagiarism before updating the articles; The server was upgraded for the Journal itself. These efforts have helped the Journal continue to be maintained in the Scopus system and the publishing work has been truly international standard.

According to Scimago"s assessment (https://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=21100286862&;;tip=sid&clean=0), the number of citations per each publication of the Journal decreased in 2016, but increased again in 2017 and sharply in 2018 (see details on the following chart). In 2018, the H (H index) of ANSN reached 27, the citation for articles published in the previous two years (equivalent to IF in Web of Science) reached 2.706 and ranked Q1 in many fields. Since the beginning of 2019, ANSN has been introduced by IOP Publisher together with the journals published by IOP to 2,353 Institutes and Universities around the world, facilitating the promotion of ANSN more widely.

Some evaluation indicators of ANSN Journal

The results of publishing quality and international professionalism have brought about a praiseworthy consequence that in January 2019 ANSN was evaluated and accepted back into Web of Science by Clarivate Analytics (the owner of ISI, previously merged into Thomson Reuters, separated from Thomson Reuters in 2016 and currently owns Web of Science with ESCI, SCI, SCI-E, SSCI). Therefore, it officially appeared in Web of Science database in ESCI"s emerging journal, 12 months earlier than the usual expected deadline.

Thus, currently three journals of VAST, including Advances in Natural Sciences: Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, and Acta Mathematica Vietnamica, are indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science (ESCI) system.

The next aim of ANSN is to be re-indexed in the list of SCI-E journals as it did in 2015. To achieve this, it takes time and unrelenting efforts of the Editorial Board, contributions of the authors, the interest and support of the VAST and good cooperation with IOP Publishing House. The Science and Technology Publishing House will always facilitate ANSN to obtain the goal, contributing to the development of Vietnamese science and technology in general and the publishing industry in particular, especially the publication of international science and technology journals.
