Academic exchange on green energy brings young scientists together with Vietnamese and Japanese students

On the morning of July 23, 2026, in Hanoi, the Graduate University of Science and Technology (GUST) under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) held an academic exchange programme with a delegation of students from Hyogo High School of Japan and students from the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under Vietnam National University, Ha Noi.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof., Dr Nguyen Xuan Nhiem, Deputy Director of the Graduate University of Science and Technology, said countries around the world are currently facing the impacts of climate change, environmental pollution and the depletion of traditional energy sources. Researchers are therefore working to develop renewable energy systems, improve energy efficiency and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Renewable energy, particularly green energy, hydrogen technology and energy storage are among the top-priority research areas. With the participation of scientists and students from the two secondary schools in Japan and Vietnam, the academic exchange programme featured presentations and discussions on hydrogen-related research topics, with a view to exchanging knowledge, sharing research experience and encouraging young people to take an interest in sustainable energy solutions.

From the perspective of green energy, Assoc. Prof., Dr Tran Quoc Tien, Deputy Head of the Institute of Materials Science, said scientists at the institute are focusing on research areas including renewable energy, such as equipment for wind power generation using high-efficiency permanent magnets, next-generation solar cells and hydrogen energy.

Professor Sumimura Yoshinori, head of the Japanese delegation, said Osaka University of Japan has established close cooperation with various units of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The academic exchange between students from Hyogo High School and the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences provided a rare opportunity for them to learn about renewable energy and hydrogen energy technologies being researched in Vietnam.
