08/12/2014
On November 13th 2014, VAST assigned the Management Board of the Small Satellite Project in coordination with the National Remote Sensing Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment to organize the 3rd workshop on ASEAN earth observation and satellites and stations.

The workshop received support from the French Airbus Defense and Space group. It was held to inherit and promote results of previous seminars and cooperation programmes of ASEAN countries in the field of remote sensing and earth stations, in the spirit towards ASEAN community in 2015 and the 20th anniversary of Vietnam’s becoming an official member of ASEAN.

The overview of the workshop

The workshop is an activity in the framework of the terms of the Subcommittee on the Subcommittee on Space Technology and Applications (SCOSA) – one of nine subcommittees under the Committee of Science and Technology (COST), founded in 1993 with the name initially being the ASEAN Expert Group on Remote Sensing (ASEGRS). ASEGRS was upgraded to Subcommittee status in 1997 with the main task of strengthening the coordination in space technology and applications in order to carry out programmes and projects, towards the realization of technologies for sustainable development in ASEAN.

The event was held to share and exchange experiences in operating and exploiting the remote sensing system, and develop remote sensing system and using satellite image data. It was also an opportunity for ASEAN countries to cooperate on remote sensing satellites, ground station networks and human resource training.

Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, vice president of VAST made a speech to open the workshop

Addressing at the workshop, Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Vice President of VAST, said that we were facing many difficulties and challenges in the management and exploitation of natural resources, environmental protection and disaster monitoring. This requires ASEAN countries to make good their efforts and strengthen cooperation to promote sustainable development in the country and the region.

Space technology in general and remote sensing system in particular, are increasing showing their role and contribution as a tool to support the monitoring of natural resources, environment and disasters, as well as a cohesive element to promote cooperation among countries in the operation of available remote sensing systems to improve the exploitation effectiveness.

Owning VNREDSat-1, Vietnam became one of the five ASEAN countries that have its own earth observation satellite system. VNREDSat-1 has been widely used to meet domestic demand, and initially used for cooperative objectives with other countries and international organizations. VAST always wishes to seek cooperation opportunities with countries in the world, especially those in the South East Asia, to share experiences, build and complete technical solutions, improve the effectiveness of operation and exploitation of satellite system.
