10th seminar “Global earth observation system for Asia-Pacific”
The seminar aims to provide Asia-Pacific researchers, engineers and students with a forum for information exchange, collaborative discussions on specific initiatives and research activities in other scientific fields related to the use of earth observation satellite data.

Attending the workshop were leaders from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Vietnam Space Centre; the GEO Secretariat; the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), about 200 delegates from many countries in the world such as China, Japan, Australia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan and the Republic of Korea.
GEOSS is founded by the GEO (Group of Earth Observation - a partnership of more than 100 members who are governments and world organizations) community, to achieve better results in integrating data-observation and sharing systems through the connection of common standards-based infrastructures. In 2014, Vietnam joined and became a member of the GEO.
In recent years, under the direction of the "Strategy for research and application of space technology until 2020," the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) have expanded their activities in regional and international cooperation in space technology, including participating in GEO and GEOSS sessions, the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF), the International Astronautical Federation (AIF); signing and implementing cooperation with a number of aerospace agencies of countries such as Japan (JAXA), the Republic of Korea (KARI); organizing international conferences on the application of space technology in socio-economic development, especially in natural disaster prevention, environmental management and natural resources.

Speaking at the seminar, Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, sent his greetings and thanks to all delegates who attended the seminar, saying that Vietnam is one of the countries seriously affected by global climate change. In fact, flash floods, landslides, tropical depression and typhoons have caused much damage to people and property. Many Asian countries like China, Thailand, Bangladesh and Mongolia are also affected by earthquakes, floods and droughts. Therefore, the workshop is an opportunity to share information, discuss the needs of Asia-Oceania for organism observation, marine observation, data of satellite observations of the earth, especially in identifying how to promote space technology and application of space technology in disaster monitoring for sustainable socio-economic development and create a better life in the green environment.
Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh also expressed his hope that the seminar would not only be a place for delegates to share information, experience and knowledge about space technology, but also to open up opportunities for cooperation among countries in studying space technology and training human resources in order to promote activities of research, application and development of space technology for serving socio-economic development.
In 2017, Vietnam is honoured to host the 10th GEOSS. In 2016, this workshop was held in Japan. The representative of Vietnam Space Centre said: "This is a great opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen and expand its cooperation with other countries in the region and in the world in research and application of space technology.”
The 10th GEOSS-AP included two plenary sessions and one working group meeting, focusing on promoting the deployment of global earth observation systems in the Asia-Pacific region; Vietnam"s demand for information and data on earth and specific experiences, in order to achieve the goal of strengthening cohesion among members and promoting the implementation of global earth observation system in the Asia-Pacific region.
