Goal and objectives of the project - Developing a set of criteria and database of the criteria for zoning ecological functions in the O Lau watershed;
- Shaping the ecological function regions in the O Lau watershed and proposing solotions to conserve ecosystems and development.
Main results
- Theoretical results:
It is the first to develop the database zoning ecological functions in the O Lau watershed, Vietnam where is located in boudary regions between Hue city and Quang Tri province. The database was organized, stored and managed in the Arcgis 10.6.1 software, under VN2000 projection, at scale 1:50.000. It includes 6 blocks with 35 data layers to shape ecological function regions in the watershed. It is scientific data having implications for other studies and areas in the future. The project developed suscessfully a procedure of ecological function zoning in the O Lau watershed consisting of three stages: (1) Surveying, identifying factors forming ecosystem functions/services; (2) Determining typical regulation functions; (3) Shaping ecological function regions in the watershed. The criteria for shaping ecological function regions have two criteria at regional level (Large landforms, Number of ecological functions), one criterion at subregional level (combination of ecosystem services). This is contribution to development of ecological function zoning field. Especially, quantifying suscessfully erosion regulation services and water seasonal yeild of natural forest ecosystems is to open some research directions in the future.
- Applied results:
The database provides important data to manage more effectively resources and environment in the watershed. The ecological function regions and subregions are basic to review and integrate social, economic planning, projects which were approved or will be developed at a given scale. It assures capacity for promoting the best ecosystem services and hamonizing between conservation and development. The solotions on implementing policies of government and Hue city, Quang Tri province about conservation of biodiversity, sustainable forestry development; effictive ultilization of resources for conserving ecosystems and sustainable development; integrating the regions and subregions into the procedure that approves projects, social – economic development programs, planning in the watershead; extending the Phong Dien protected area into neighborhood natural forest areas; promoting exploration of ecosystem services combining with economic sectors, which are recommendations to contribute to conservation and promotion ecosystem services in the watershed and brings pratical benefits to the local socio-economic development.
