| Main results | - Theoretical results:
The project conducted surveys and collection of rice-associated plant-parasitic nematodes in major rice-growing areas of the Red River Delta across six provinces: Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Thai Binh.
The species composition of rice plant-parasitic nematodes was described, and datasets on morphological, molecular characteristics and distribution maps were compiled to assess population dynamics. Two species new to science were recorded: Hirschmanniella namdinhensis sp. n. and Aphelenchoides vinhphucensis. In addition, three species were reported for the first time on rice in Vietnam (Pratylenchus parazeae, Hemicriconemoides phoenicis, Paratrichodorus minor).
The nematode community was dominated by two migratory endoparasitic species (Hirschmanniella oryzae, H. mucronata) and one sedentary endoparasitic species (Meloidogyne graminicola), which pose high risks of becoming major pests in most surveyed areas. The “ufra” disease caused by Ditylenchus angustus was not detected in the Red River Delta. Leaf white-tip disease and grain sterility caused by Aphelenchoides besseyi were found only in limited, localized sampling sites in Hai Phong and Vinh Phuc.
The ecological transition of rice cultivation from fully flooded soils to intermittently flooded systems has created favorable conditions for the adaptation and development of aerobic nematode groups harmful to rice.
Sustainable management measures were proposed based on cultivation practices, the use of bioproducts, and the ecological and biological characteristics of key nematode species.
- Applied results:
The dataset on major nematode pests of rice in the Red River Delta serves as an important reference for diagnosis and pest risk assessment in agricultural production and helps prevent nematode outbreaks. The proposed sustainable management solutions—based on cultivation techniques, biological products and ecological insights—are readily applicable in practice. |
