Goal and objectives of the project

Research on algorithm to correct sun-glint on VNREDSat-1, Sentinel-2 satellite images based on measured spectral reflectance dataset.

Main results

In term of Science:
-    The research has been successful in selecting methods, building and developing algorithms to eliminate the effects of sun-glint on VNREDSat-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite images.
In term of applicable products:
This study can contribute some products as follows:
-    The reflectance spectrum data set is measured in the Con Dao area and some points along the survey route of the OPARIN ship. This data set combined with previous measurement data can be used for other marine studies.
-    The calculation tool to eliminate the sun-glint effect on Sentinel-2 images on the GEE (Google Earth Engine) platform can be widely used in studies in shallow sea and coastal areas.
-    The calculation method using empirical coefficients to eliminate the sun glint effect on Sentinel-2 satellite images can be used for other types of high-resolution satellite images, so it has high application significance.

Recommendations

In this study, the method of sunglint correction is based on empirical coefficients. These coefficients vary according to each research area as well as the relationship between the spectral channels on the type of image that needs to be corrected. Therefore, in the future, more research is needed to increase the accuracy of the empirical coefficients for this method.
The product of the project is a method of correcting sun glare on high-resolution remote sensing data such as VNREDSat-1, Sentinel-2, which is highly applicable, easy to implement and can be widely applied to marine remote sensing research in Vietnam's sea as well as other areas.
The project has successfully overcome the limitations when using remote sensing data to study objects in the marine environment, which is the effect of sunlight caused by waves on high-resolution satellite images. Thereby improving the effectiveness of remote sensing data application in marine research in general.
