Goal and objectives of the project

Create datasets on the essential oil plants in the Northwestern region of Vietnam (including species composition, distribution, chemical composition of essential oils...),  identify essential oil species of potential and scientific-economic value.
Propose solutions for the protection, development and sustainable use of the potential and valuable species.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
+ A total of 233 essential oil plant species belonging to 110 genera and 36 families in some Northwestern provinces were recorded along with the data on morphology, biology, ecology, distribution…. of some representative species. including 100 collection numbers (220 specimens).
+ 167 essential oil plants were classified into 6 commodity groups including timber plants, medicinal plants, edible plants, ornamental plants and spice plants, among them 22 species were listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam and the Governmental Decree No.84/ND-CP.
+ The yield and chemical composition of essential oils of 56 species were identified, among them some species were studied for the first time.
- Applied results:
The study results were the scientific basis for management, conservation and development of some essential oil plants in four Northwestern provinces of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Son La, Lai Chau and Dien Bien).

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

This is the first study on the diversity of essential oil plants in four Northwestern provinces of Vietnam. New records on the distribution of some essential oil plant species were reported and the essential oils extracted from many species were analyzed for the first time in Vietnam.
