Goal and objectives of the project

Overall goal
- Establish a national geochemical reference base of elements in the surface environment for sustainable development and environmental protection.
Goals in Phase 1
- Building a methodology and process for assessing the national multi-purpose geochemical baseline foundation according to international conventions, suitable for Vietnam's conditions;
- Building a database and comprehensively assess the national multi-purpose geochemical baseline foundation for the six northern border provinces;
- Propose the exploitation and use of the national multi-purpose geochemical baseline database to serve sustainable development, environmental protection and public health.

Main results

- Theoretical results: The project has developed a national multi-purpose geochemical baseline assessment process. The project has analyzed a total of 9,233 samples of various types, including soil: 6,088 samples, water: 1,887 samples, and stream sediment: 1,258 samples. The analysis results with more than 50 elements were processed using statistical methods and specialized software to determine basic statistical parameters and necessary information. The project has built a set of geochemical baseline maps with over 250 maps at a scale of 1:250000 and over 500 maps at a scale of 1:50000 with detailed explanations.
- Applied results: The project has completely built a geochemical database in Web-GIS format along with applications on mobile devices to help look up information online for different purposes: environmental management, applications in agriculture, minerals, etc.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- For the first time, a national multi-purpose geochemical baseline assessment process has been established that is suitable for Vietnam and in line with international standards.
- For the first time, a synchronous geochemical baseline database of 05 objects (A-layer soil, C-layer soil, surface water, groundwater, stream sediments) has been established in a large and difficult area in Vietnam (6 northern border provinces, area of 44,000 km2).
- For the first time, a geochemical baseline database has been built and managed on a Web-GIS platform, software on mobile devices.

Recommendations

The project's component management board recommends that the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology continue to implement the project "Building a national multi-target geochemistry foundation" in the next phase in other regions across the country.
