Goal and objectives of the project

- Isolation and structural determination of anti-inflammatory compounds from several species of the genus Rauvolfia in Vietnam.
- Training and enhancing research capacity in the field of natural bioactive compound discovery for young researchers participating in the project.

Main results

Sixteen compounds were isolated and structurally determined from the aerial parts of Rauvolfia tetraphylla L., including three new compounds: rauvolphylla A (RT1), rauvolphylla B (RT2), and rauvolphylla C (RT3); thirteen known compounds were also identified: 18β-hydroxy-3-epi-α-yohimbine (RT4), yohimbine (RT5), α-yohimbine (RT6), 17-epi-α-yohimbine (RT7), (E)-vallesiachotamine (RT8), (Z)-vallesiachotamine (RT9), 16S-E-isositsirikine (RT10), Nb-methylisoajimaline (RT11), Nb-methylajimaline (RT12), ajimaline (RT13), (+)-lyoniresinol 3α-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (RT14), (+)-isolarisiresinol 3α-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (RT15), and (-)-lyoniresinol 3α-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (RT16). These compounds belong to two main structural classes: alkaloids and lignans.
- Compounds RT5–RT7 and RT11–RT13 exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting NO production, with IC50 values ranging from 28.56 ± 1.36 to 79.10 ± 1.53 µM.
- Compounds RT8 and RT9 demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting intracellular calcium elevation induced in HT29 cells at a concentration of 30 µM, with inhibition percentages of 56.7% and 85.4%, respectively.
- Strengthening the research capacity of team members in isolating and determining the chemical structures of natural compounds; expanding collaboration and research capabilities in evaluating anti-lung cancer effects.
-  The project results were published in an international journal indexed in the SCIE database and contributed to the training of one Ph.D. candidate.
- The outcomes of the international cooperation task enhanced research collaboration between the research team and partners, including the Institute of Marine Biochemistry and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Science Research and Development Foundation, as well as between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

-  For the first time, the chemical composition and anti-inflammatory activity of compounds isolated from the aerial parts of Rauvolfia tetraphylla in Vietnam were studied.
- Three new compounds were isolated and their chemical structures determined.
- This was the first international cooperation project in Science and Technology between the Institute of Marine Biochemistry and the Center for New Drug Development, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Science Research and Development Foundation, South Korea.
