Goal and objectives of the project

This project amins to investigate the diversity and evaluate potential use of insects in the northern border area of Vietnam as a contribution to linkage nature conservation and socio-economic development.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
+ A total of 1591 insect species in 911 genera, 107 families, 6 orders were recorded in the northern border area of Vietnam.
+ In term of concervation concerns, we recorded eight threatened species, 31 endemic species, 10 new species and 38 new country records of inssect from the northern border area of Vietnam.
+ A total of 26 insect species were used for different purposes: 23 species used for food, seven species used for traditional medicine and seven species known as natural enemies of insect pests. Among them, two species can be bred in captivity and two other species can be bred under the control for commercial purposes, six species can be collected for sustainable use, seven species are useful enemies of pest control, one species of conservation concern and eight species are known as agricultural pests.
+ We identified the priority sites for insect conservation, seven threats to insects in the northern border area of Vietnam. We also provided recommendations for conservation measures, including (1) Improvement of law enforcement and (2) Implementation of conservation measures and sustainable development.
- Applied results:
+ The results of this project are essential for biodiversity conservation planning and management in the northern border area of Vietnam.
+ The results on potential use of insects are useful for sustainable exploiting of the insect resources for socio-economy development of local communities.
+ The insect collection can be used for research and training at the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- We provide an updated list of insects from Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces in the northern border area of Vietnam. Remarkably, as a results of this project 10 new species and 38 new country records were discovered from Vietnam.
- We provide additional information about potential use and economic value of 26 insect species from the northern border area of Vietnam.
- We identify seven threats to the insect fauna in the northern border area of Vietnam and provide recommendations for conservation measures.

Research region

Results of this project can be used by provincial authorities of Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces for conservation planning and sustainable use of biological resources for example Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Enviroonment and Natural Resources.
Novel data of this project can be used by Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for the National Database of Biodiversity.

Recommendations Some endangered species of insects should be considered for inclusion in the Red Data Book as well as the list of protected species in governmental decree.
