Goal and objectives of the project

- Fabrication of protective hydrophobic coatings for steel substrates based on epoxy and organic silicon compounds and fluoropolymers to enhance the anti-corrosion protection, waterproofing and mechanical properties of the coating.
- Training staff and helping the research team have access to new research directions and advanced equipment in the world.

Main results

- It has successfully fabricated the hydrophobic coating systems with anti-corrosion protection, water resistance and physical and mechanical durability for steel substrates consisting of surface-modified epoxy (EP) coatings with organic silicon compounds (octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), hydrolyzed heptadecafluorotetrahydrodecyltrimethoxysilane (HDFS)) by spin coating method and fluoropolymers (polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyvinylidene fluoride ( PVDF)) by vapor deposition method. The obtained results showed that the surface modification of the EP surface with organic silicon compounds and fluoropolymers increased its hydrophobicity, and improved anticorrosion behavior and wear resistance. The water contact angle of EP and bilayer coatings EP/OTS, EP/HDFS, EP/PVDF, and EP/PTFE are 84°, 108º, 116º, 96º, and 128º, respectively. The surface treatment of epoxy coatings with organic silicon compounds and fluoropolymers reduced their friction coefficient. It was shown that after 336 hours of samples of coating systems based on epoxy resin, organic silicon compounds, and fluoropolymers in the salt spray chamber, no corrosion was detected on their surfaces. The developed hydrophobic coating systems based on epoxy resin, organic silicon compounds, and fluoropolymers can be used to protect metal structures for various functional purposes from corrosion. 
- Improve the research capacity of the research team on the method of manufacturing thin films and superhydrophobic films to protect against corrosion for metal substrates.
- It has strengthened the scientific research and training cooperation between the Institute for Tropical Technology and the research and training facilities at the Belarus National Academy of Sciences.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

Recommendations

The project has successfully fabricated the hydrophobic, friction-resistant, anti-corrosion coating systems for steel based on epoxy and organic silicon compounds and fluoropolymers. Through a collaborative research project with the Institute of Chemistry of New Materials, Belarusian National Academy of Sciences, the research team has improved its qualifications in methods of manufacturing thin films and superhydrophobic films, and has access to new technologies and analytical equipment. We hope that the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology will support us to continue developing this cooperation.
