Coordinating unit, co-chair Belarusian State University
Project leader’s name Dr. Le Thi My Hanh and Prof. Dr. Savitskaya Tachiana Aleksandrovna
Project duration 01/01/2022 - 30/06/2024
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

- Manufacturing biodegradable films from longan seed extract and some organic additives for tea packaging and fruit preservation films.

Main results

- Polyphenols were extracted from longan seeds powder using 3 different processes, in which the EtOH/H2O solvent system gave the highest extraction efficiency and polyphenol content of 179 mg GAE.g-1. The extract sample showed antibacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus and free radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 65.3 μg/mL. A material membrane based on the biopolymer cellulose acetate in the presence of longan extract has been fabricated. The material membrane with the ratio CA/DC-10/1.5 (v/v) gives the best mechanical and thermal properties and also exhibits antibacterial activity against E. coli and DPPH free radical scavenging. The test of preserving longan fruit with CDA1.5 material film obtained positive results in preserving longan fruit.
- It improved the level of the research team.
- It has strengthened the scientific research and training cooperation between the Institute for Tropical Technology and the research and training facilities at the Belarusian State University.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

A material membrane based on the biopolymer cellulose acetate in the presence of longan extract has been fabricated. The material membrane with the ratio CA/DC-10/1.5 (v/v) gives the best mechanical and thermal properties, and also exhibits antibacterial activity against E.coli and DPPH free radical scavenging. The experiment of preserving longan fruits with the obtained film showed positive longan preservation results.

Recommendations

The project extracted polyphenols from longan seed powder and successfully manufactured cellulose acetate/longan extract (CA/DC) membranes of natural origin that were environmentally friendly using the solvent casting method. Research and evaluation results show that longan extract and CA/DC material membranes with a ratio of 10/1.5 have the ability to capture free radicals (DPPH) and antibacterial E. coli. The test of preserving labels with the resulting material film showed positive results; the vitamin C content and weight loss of the preserved fruit were better than the control fruit sample without preservation. Through the project, the research team has cooperated with the Department of Chemistry at Belarusian National University and improved their qualifications in researching and manufacturing natural polymer membrane materials. We respectfully hope that the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology will accept the project and support it so that cooperation can continue to develop.
