Goal and objectives of the project
- Apply geoinformatic technology to assess the impacts of various natural disasters (erosion, deposition, floods, inundation) on coastal areas in Vietnam (specifically the Cua Hoi region, Nghe An province) to facilitate sustainable coastal zone management.
- Maintain the collaborative research relationship between two Institutes. Enhance capabilities in researching and analyzing coastal zone and watershed management for young scientists in the Institute of Geography.
Main results

This project focuses on researching the following:
This project has successfully applied geoinformatic technology to assess the impacts of various natural disasters (erosion, deposition, floods, inundation) on the coastal areas of the Cua Hoi river mouth, Nghe An province supporting sustainable coastal zone management. Specifically:
- Established  a processing procedure to compute and monitor the changes of the shoreline and river mouth from optical satellite imagery data (Landsat 1-3 MSS, Landsat 4-5) and radar satellite imagery (Sentinel-1) on the cloud computing platform of GEE. Evaluated the coastline changes in Cua Hoi estuary of Nghe An province from 1965 to 2022. The research results illustrated a comprehensive overview of shoreline and river mouth changes over different periods in the study area.
- Applied MIKE 21/3 FM model to simulate hydrodynamic processes for the Cua Hoi river mouth area. The research results presented hydrodynamic processes in the coastal area around Cua Hoi river mouth (waves, coastal currents). This is an important basis for assessing erosion-deposition dynamics, identifying causes and mechanisms of coastal erosion and deposition, river mouth sedimentation, and inundation in the study area. Additionally, several modules of the MIKE model (MIKE FLOOD, MIKE 11HD, MIKE 21) have been applied to simulate some major floods, especially historical floods that occurred in the lower basin of the Ca River. Computational results were calibrated and validated with flood data obtained from satellite imagery. The comparison indicated a good agreement between model results and satellite imagery. Then, MIKE model can be used to simulate the flood in the research area.
- The project proposed several science and technology solutions aimed at stablizing, protecting the river mouth and coastline; prevention and mitigation the effects of erosion, deposition, flood and inundation in coastal areas and river mouth.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

In contrast to previous studies in the coastal areas of the Cua Hoi river mouth, Nghệ An province, this project has comprehensively researched and quantitatively evaluated the erosion and deposition processes in the study area using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform and the DSAS tool integrated into the ArcGIS software. Remote sensing data and image processing technology on cloud computing, especilly on GEE, demonstrate great potential for application in assessing shoreline and river bank changes, and monitoring environmental resources. If real-time satellite imagery databases or near-real-time environmental monitoring systems are quickly integrated into the storage and exploitation system of GEE, it will create a highly efficient processing and analysis environment for territorial management activities as well as scientific research.
